What is Golfer’s Elbow?

Golfer’s Elbow, also known as Medial Epicondylitis, is an overuse injury with inflammation and pain on the inner side of elbow bone.

Chronic (long-standing) Golfer’s Elbow is due to muscle degeneration.

Symptoms of Golfer’s Elbow

Golfer’s Elbow includes pain on inside of elbow where tendon becomes inflamed.

• Pain at inside of elbow
• Pain from elbow to forearm
• Pain from elbow to wrist
• Pain in wrist flexor trigger points

Stretches for Golfer’s Elbow

• Active range of motion: Wrist flexion/ extension

bend wrist on same arm as the affected elbow back and forward as far as you are able (1 set of 15/ twice per day)

• Wrist stretch-forward

Press on fingers of the hand on same arm as affected elbow with opposite hand to bend wrist back (hold 15 seconds)

• Wrist stretch-back

Press the back of the hand on same arm as affected elbow to bend wrist (hold 15 seconds)

• Forearm Pronation (down)/ Supination (up)

Bend elbow of arm affected arm at 90 degrees, keeping arm at your side. Turn palm up (hold 5 seconds). Turn palm down (hold 5 seconds).

(Any strengthening exercises should be approved first by your physician if undergoing rehabilitative treatment).

 

What Causes Golfer’s Elbow?

Golfer’s Elbow is an overuse injury caused by doing the same movement over time, leading to injury.

• Wrist-gripping overuse
• Arm-rotation overuse
• Wrist-flexion overuse

How to Diagnose Golfer’s Elbow

Doctor visit usually relies on pain symptoms to diagnose Golfer’s Elbow. Imaging such as MRI or ultrasound can show tendon tears, tendon damage or inflammation of the elbow.

Prognosis and Treatment of Golfer’s Elbow

Tendonosis (another chronic elbow pain) may co-occur with Golfer’s elbow and having both may increase healing time. Tendonosis is a deterioration of the cartilage within the tendon. Resting and elevating the elbow can help relieve swelling, as well as acupuncture to reduce inflammation and pain.

• Corticosteroid injections have not proven effective long-term
