Other Ways Acupuncture Can Help:

Acupuncture can also be great to get right before a Chiropractic adjustment.

Why is this?

Because Acupuncture loosens up the back muscles and helps lower inflammation.

This can help prep the back for an adjustment before a chiropractic appointment.

Just to be clear, We do NOT do Chiropractic adjustments. Only Acupuncture. And Cupping (when appropriate).

And Facial Cosmetic Acupuncture.  And e-stim (electric stimulation/ tens unit) attached to needles (when necessary).

Fix Knee Pain with Acupuncture…

Acupuncture is good at relieving knee pain due to Arthritis, whether due to Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the wear-and-tear type of Arthritis…In general, our parts age as we age.

Osteoarthritis usually affects larger, weight-bearing joints, like hips and knees.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an Auto Immune disease.

Rheumatoid Arthritis usually affects smaller, non-weight-bearing joints like knuckles of the fingers.

The joint lining is affected in Rheumatoid Arthritis and can lead to twisted, deformed joints.

Both cause pain.

Both cause joint damage.

Post-surgery Knee Pain:

Acupuncture is great for lowering the inflammation and swelling after knee surgery and can help heal scars from surgery.

Scars are not just an issue of vanity. They can interfere with the circulation.

This can cause long-term numbness or a feeling of cold sensation at the scar site.

Acupuncture treats knee scars and scars in other areas of the body, too.

It is good to wait about six weeks after to treat the actual scar itself.

This is because we want the cell matrix to ensure the build-up of collagen and healthy tissue.

In other words, we do not want to mess with the healing process.

It is creating a scar to protect you for a reason.

Acupuncture can be administered right after surgery, just not right at the scar site before six weeks time.

Acupuncture has been shown to help relieve knee pain and to help improve knee function.

Acupuncture is good for almost all types of pain-even long-standing, chronic pain!

Read more Here on How Acupuncture Can Help with Joint Pain in general.

Many of my acupuncture patients with bone-on-bone knee pain, have been able to avoid knee replacement surgery for many years!

This can be great for some who are unable to commit to taking the required time off for recovery due to job, etc.

Some just want to buy some time.

Either way, acupuncture lowers inflammation and pain.

Is Acupuncture good for Ringing in the Ear (a.k.a., “Tinnitus”)?

I get this question all the time.

The short answer is, “Maybe.”

Tinnitus is helped with acupuncture about 50% of the time.

Why Not Acupuncture for Tinnitus?

This is because the cause for tinnitus can be from many things.

Often nerve damage has taken place.

Sometimes the damage comes from injury, surgery or from too loud of noises over time, like the workplace or loud concerts.

Causes of Tinnitus

  • Respiratory infection
  • Nerve damage
  • Injury
  • Stress

Symptoms of Tinnitus

  • High pitched or Low pitched ringing in the ear(s)
  • buzzing sound
  • hissing sound
  • humming sound
  • Comes and goes or Constant
  • Minor or Severe

When to See a Doctor

  • As with anytime you experience something suddenly or severely (or both), see your doctor
  • Occurring after Respiratory infection or Cold
  • with dizziness
  • with hearing loss

If there is hearing loss, waiting to see a doctor may result in more nerve damage (if there is damage) and/or more hearing loss.

Better to see a doctor to be sure before it is too late.

After all, it is one of your five senses.

Transparency in Treatments

This is why I am very honest with people when they ask if I can help with Tinnitus.

I can try, though do not want to see someone throw their money away if it does not work.

Of course, when it does work, then it is worth it.

I think it is always important to have transparency when you see anyone about anything.

Getting the upfront possible outcomes makes it easier to decide on whether or not to try acupuncture, or anything in life.

Research Proves Acupuncture Helps with…

What is proven to work is Acupuncture on Pain and Inflammation.

Back pain, headaches, chronic pain, joint pain, muscle pain, period cramps, etc.

5 Ways to Improve Your Pain Tolerance. But, first…

Where Low Pain Tolerance Comes From

  • Trauma
  • PTSD/ PTS
  • Genetics
  • Pandemics/ Disasters/ Wars

Your Pain Tolerance can say a lot about you.

Interestingly, studies have found red heads to have lower pain tolerance. There may be more than one factor at play…

Genetics can influence our Pain Tolerance, according to research. In my clinical experience, this is often true.

Trauma- Having a low pain threshold can come from past trauma such as early childhood trauma, including abuse/neglect.

It can also be a response from adult trauma or abuse.

Natural Disasters, Wars and Pandemics increase the stress response and can affect Pain.

PTSD is a condition that can affect Pain tolerance. It is often called PTS (dropping the “D” for Disorder can lessen the stigma).

Pandemics can cause a form of PTSD or PTS.

Did You Know?…Acupuncture can be effective for the PTSD Person suffering with Anxiety, Sleep and Stress. It is true. I have seen it and experienced it.

Check Back for More on PTSD Here

It will be interesting to see how the current COVID-19 Pandemic affects people in relation to Pain tolerance!

5 Ways to Improve Your Pain Tolerance (Reasons it May be Low)…

  1. Sleep
  2. Stress-Reduce it!
  3. Stress-Take on Less
  4. Movement
  5. Breathing
  6. Talk Therapy
  7. Meditation

By the Way, Acupuncture is Great for Pain!

How does Acupuncture Work on Pain?…

Acupuncture Activates the Nervous System which then tells the brain to release pain-relieving chemicals like endorphins.

Sleep- Sleep is huge! Sleep is when your body repairs. Those who have a deficit of sleep show lower pain tolerance.

Stress- If Stress makes Pain Worse, then Let’s lower our Stress. There are ways we can improve our stress. It is true that sometimes genetics has an influence. However, we do not need to take on new stress. Say “No” to new responsibilities if you are already stressed. Reduce the stress you already have (see other ways on the above list to help).

Movement- We can do daily movement. If we are too stressed out to do strenuous exercise (like H.I.I.T. training) or Hot Yoga, we can opt for slower, more gentle options. This is often not a very Western way to look at self-improvement. We often think we need to Go-Go-Go and Work-Work-Work. We think Faster and More is better. Well, I am here to tell you that in my early twenties I had a lesson in this…

I did Qigong for the first time for 45 minutes and didn’t think anything of it other than it was an interesting activity to try that “old” people do just to do something…Boy was I WRONG. DEAD WRONG. Then next day I awoke to soreness in muscles everywhere. Muscles I did not even know I had. Movements like Qigong (Chigong), TaiChi and Gentle Yoga stretches can have a profound positive effect on our bodies since they use all muscles. Sometimes keeping muscles taut and stretching them gently in order to release long-held stress.

Meditation is great for reducing stress. I am a lifelong participant and recommend DAILY practice to reduce your stress. It has even been proven to lower blood pressure! Perhaps this is why doctors of old would prescribe petting a cat to their bp patients.

Meditation Resources Here

Breathing exercises- Becoming aware of the breath can be a life saver for stressful times in our lives. Hey! We will always be jumping through hoops of fire in life. We need to train ourselves to stop and breathe. Like acupuncture, breathing can get you out of the Fight or Flight and back into the Rest and Digest. I like a few techniques and will share two:

  1. The 1-2 count: Breathe in on count of 1; breathe out on count of 1. Then breathe in on count of 2; breathe out on count of 2. Repeat. If you forget which number you are on, start at 1 again. So Simple. The brain can easily return to this even when stress is causing fuzzy thinking.
  2. The 4-7-8 Breathe in for a count of 4-hold breath for a count of 7-exhale out for a count of 8. This one helped me be able to hold my breath for over a minute! It takes practice so start slowly. Check with your doctor before holding your breath longer than this exercise.

Talk Therapy- Many with intensified pain have had Childhood trauma, especially during the early formative years (ages 1-3) and also on up to age 7. I am not going to get real science-y here and you can do your own further research into this. Just know that the memory of trauma affects the nerves when the brain is “triggered” and we carry these traumas in our tissues. Ever feel the stress in an injured area of your body?-It is kind of like this.

These days almost everyone has seen a talk therapist so get the stigma right out of your head! Seeking help from a licensed therapist can help you to see why you are holding stress in your body and you can begin (under the care of a professional) to work through this and improve your body’s response to stress and your ability to improve your pain tolerance can follow.

These days therapy can be done through virtual means (in the middle of a pandemic) thanks to companies like Telehealth and Zoom. No excuses. Take care of yourself. Time for Self Care. Especially during a Pandemic, do the Self-Care.

What is the Science behind How Acupuncture Helps Pain and Depression?

  • Fight or Flight vs. Rest & Digest
  • Acupuncture increases circulation
  • Acupuncture lowers inflammation
  • Acupuncture releases endorphins (feel-good hormones)

I get this question often from friends, family and patients:

How does Acupuncture relieve?…

Well, I will tell You How…

1. Acupuncture decreases Pain by persuading the body to release specific endorphins.

These endorphins relieve pain.

2. Acupuncture increases Qi and blood (circulation) to the affected area and decreases inflammation in the body.

Inflammation causes pain. Chronic (long-term) inflammation causes disease.

Acupuncture decreases Pain & Inflammation.

3. Acupuncture urges us out of Fight or Flight mode–back into Rest & Digest mode (no morphine required).

This is also how acupuncture prompts the body to deal with mild to moderate depression & anxiety-

Did You Know Acupuncture Lights up the Morphine Center of the Brain?!…

This is Why the Military Uses Acupuncture called “Battlefield Acupuncture.”

It is used by the military because it is cheaper and faster-acting than morphine. They can administer needles and get enough pain-relief within five minutes to then assist hurt soldiers from the field.

They can then attend to the more critically wounded.

The military has spent much time and money on researching the effects of acupuncture on pain relief. This is for good reason. Many soldiers do not want to take pain medications.

They do not want to get dependent on or addicted to drugs.

Youtube has a video of “Battlefield Acupuncture” done by the military.

Check it out to see for yourself!

Acupuncture Helps Lower Inflammation! …Where’s the Proof?

Anoka Acupuncture with Aleesha D Ackerman

Did You Know…?

Inflammation Markers are actually lower after acupuncture and …the results can have lasting effects.

This is why Acupuncture works great for pain due to things like Joint pain, Arthritis; Rheumatoid Arthritis and OsteoArthritis.

This is also why Acupuncture works great after surgery and is often used in hospitals now after knee surgeries.

How Acupuncture Treats Knee Pain

The Western research is now catching up to prove how and why acupuncture works using testing for inflammation markers and imaging. We always knew it worked. Now we are finding out how…

If you have Pain and Inflammation, you should try acupuncture. Acupuncture is a drug-free, surgery-free answer to pain.

Many doctors such as neurologists, rheumatologists and dentists send patients to me who are looking for natural ways to deal with pain.

Acupuncture works!

My Eyes! My Eyes Someone HELP ME!

“My Mother’s Eyes”

…This was my mom’s dream (or Vision) the night before and this was her screaming. My mom doesn’t like to call it premonition.

Fast forward to the next day…my mom was seeing a dark “thumb print” over her vision.

Naturally, we got in to see the eye doctor on our way to the beach (so we thought).

Turns out, the universe had other plans for us.

The eye appointment was taking forever. I was starting to get concerned in the waiting area as others were coming and going from their appointments. Just as I was getting up to check-in with the front desk, my mom emerges wearing sun glasses and telling me in a very slow, deliberate voice -a voice that I have never heard coming from her– that she has a retinal tear in her eye that will progress if not dealt with and that we need to go NOW.

The diagnosis was a HALF-way Tear of her retina.

–In that moment when she told me I would have to drive to the hospital, I was shocked at how CALM we both remained.–

Immediately I took her by the arm (her eyes were dilated -two times) and drove us from the eye clinic to the eye surgeon across town. Then we Waited. and Waited. And WAITED-all day! Florida has way more senior folks who need medical care than there are specialty docs to serve them. It just is what it is.

–No food all day. Just water and watered-down coffee. Yet, my Mom & I, we were Cool, baby!–

You see, in the past something like this would have left me with the signs and symptoms of someone in Fight or Flight, the Sympathetic state of panic and ANXIETY! …In the past I would be feeling sweating palms, dry throat and mouth so much so that I would have to constantly sip on water, heart palpitations felt in my chest, brain fog right at the time when I need to focus the sharpest to retain all information and options discussed by the medical team and I would have had a quiver in my voice as if I may completely lose my shit and of course, at one point I would have and this would have included crying like a helpless baby. I would have escaped outside or to a bathroom where nobody could see or hear me, of course.

None of that happened. Say What? We were both CALM and steady. WHY? How could this be?…

We both have been practicing daily meditation for years, on our own and together at times, sometimes in classes together.

Through Meditation, We had trained our brains to react with calm and peace in a time of uncertainty. Yeah, I know (even ME)!

This is what training your mind and body can do for you and for your life. You stay grounded even amidst the chaos you are IN. This does NOT mean you are unaffected or that you become some kind of uncaring psychopath who incapable of feeling empathy. The thing is–it no longer TAKES OVER you.

Feels pretty good to be able to function and take care of what is necessary–at the times when your loved ones need you most!

Funny thing is, my Mom & I were both laughing the night before about how “You Never Know” what will happen in Life! You gotta savor the moments on this beautiful Journey ‘cuz they won’t last.

Read This Post on Mindfulness Meditation with authors and books I recommend to my patients (and my friends).

Acupuncture also serves to help us relax and move from the Fight or Flight to the Rest and Digest (Sympathetic to Parasympathetic) and lowers inflammation markers (lowers inflammation) and Pain. Just Saying…May want to get in!
