Avoid this Stress: Our Travel Update

There are major life changes that cause huge amounts of stress in life. Such as, Getting Married, Moving and Quitting Jobs.

These can be wonderful experiences.

Just not all at once.

I mean,  Space   them   out.

Well, here’s (Our) timeline example of how

NOT to do ALL these things…

September 2022 Mark and I got married.

No time for formal or fancy wedding with our separate lives in separate states.

Eloped on a weekend. Both back to work Monday.

Life was Crazy! …flying back and forth to see my husband 1-2 times a month. This started 6 months prior when we got engaged.

AND…

In between flights to Mark and flights home to MN to my acupuncture practice,

sometimes I’d fly to FL to help my mother with my stepfather who was quickly declining due to Lewy body Dementia.

End December 2022 Closed my acupuncture clinic in Anoka, MN. This was one of the hardest things to do when you have started your own practice and absolutely love what you do and love the people that you serve everyday.

(Felt like I was selling my baby).

Lots of hugs, cards, tears and a lot of work!

(Exhausted).

March 2022 We sold Mark’s home in West Virginia. It took a month longer than expected. This included living there for a month (Mark missed an unexpected month of work) to do needed repairs, paint, etc.

This was one of the hardest things for him to do after building that beautiful log home (surrounded by streams and mountain) with his own hands.

Lots of letting go and a lot of work!

(Exhausted).

April 2022 A month later we sold my townhome in Minnesota. I flew home alone. Mark was at work (missed too much selling his home) and unavailable to physically help me move-

he did arrange for professional packers that I needed, yet insisted that I didn’t need (thanks, honey).

Last minute painting, supervising the movers and packers, storage facility, cleaning service, and close on the sale of the home.

No time to catch up with family, friends or patients, other than whoever stopped over to help…

my daughter who chatted with me on the step (the only place to sit) in that empty house right before I had to leave for the airport,

my dad mudded/ sanded walls,

a then patient (now friend) helped me declutter…

and two best friends who shuttle me to the airport and cat sit.

They work for dark chocolate and my “storytelling” as they call it.

Well they love (most) cats and my Shay-Shay.

I think they must like me, too. I mean, that is a LOT of driving and cat sitting over six-months!

If you don’t already have at least one, Get some close friends like mine. They are irreplaceable gems.

As are my parents, my husband, and my daughter and stepson.

Irreplaceable Gems.

A lot of work.

(Exhausted)…

But Doable with Irreplaceable Gems.

Take Away: Take Your Time!

To safeguard your energy,

Avoid doing these major life changes (all at once) as we did!…

1. Sell Your Business

2. Get married

3. Sell Your House(s)

4. Move

Over 8 months I sold my practice, we both sold our homes and moved. We knew it would be tough. It was.

Would we ever do all that again in such a short period of time (even with Irreplaceable Gems)?…

NO WAY!

Winter Blues To Do List

For some, especially far north of the equator winter blues are no fun.

To Do List

1. Check Labs for “optimal” vitamin d level in your blood*

It takes time to build vitamin d in your body with supplements (pills or liquid).

If your vitamin d is very low a doctor may prescribe a one time high dosage pill of 50,000 IU’s of vitamin d.

(Commonly 1,000-5,000 IU is taken per day)…

50,000 IU at once is quite high! …Obviously your vitamin d level is quite low if a doctor prescribes this dose at once.

-You should have vitamin d checked annually-Even if you already are taking an anti-depressant and especially if prone to vitamin d deficiency.

Read Signs of vitamin D Deficiency Here

2. Do not ignore symptoms of severe depression. Get a mental health evaluation when needed. (Ask your Dr to check your vitamin d in labs, too)

3. Check for other deficiencies such as low iron/ferritin blood levels in labs.

Ask your doctor to order a blood panel of tests around your main complaint such as low energy or fatigue.

Try taking a magnesium supplement after checking with your doctor first. Be sure to use the correct type of magnesium for you!

4. Daily Movement/ Exercise

You can start out with slow, easy movements such as an intro yoga class, including chair yoga if your mobility/ movement is less right now.

Yoga and walking are both good for back pain. yoga helps keep the spine supple to avoid joint pain.

Walking can help back pain by means of the swinging back and forth motion of the arms.

Movement with others is even better for lifting our mood!

Movement as Play time is great for the mood!

5. Acupuncture &/or similar healing modality

Regular appointments with your licensed acupuncturist, massage therapist or chiropractor can really help manage the winter blues.

We know acupuncture has been shown to improve mood and relax the nervous system.

Foods with Vitamin D…

Vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin because absorption in the body improves with exposure to the sun.

Most of us who live up north (and more and more in the south now, too) are deficient in vitamin D.

Best Vitamin D food Sources:

  • Egg yolks
  • Fatty fish
  • Liver
  • Grass-fed butter
  • Grass-fed cheese

Fatty fishes like codfish, mackerel, halibut and wild caught Alaskan or sockeye salmon are high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D.

Liver is highly regarded in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diets for nourishing the vision. Beef or chicken livers can be fried up with onions and garlic and eaten monthly or more often for those who fall into the Qi and Blood deficiency patterns. Check with your doctor or dietitian first if you have diet restrictions.

Do you think you are deficient in vitamin D?

Are you tired?  Depressed?…

Your Immune System, Your Lung Qi…

What is Lung Qi?

Qi is our life force energy. Lung Qi is the lifeforce energy of our Lungs.

Signs/Symptoms of Weak Lung Qi-

Allergies

Asthma

Coughing

Skin rashes

Prone to sickness

Sensitive to cold weather

Weak voice, worse with exertion

In TCM, the Lungs open to the Skin. The Skin is like an extension of the Lungs.

The skin is the last layer of protection for us from the outside pathogens. It protects us from “evils” such as wind and cold.

There is something called Wei Qi

Wei Qi-

Wei Qi is our immunity-it is seen as the most outer layer of a fortress, think orcs (wei qi) defending the castle (your body).

As your body is weakened by poor lifestyle habits,

or even heavy grieving our Wei Qi immunity weakens. *Grief or Sorrow is the emotion tied to the Lungs.

So, poor sleep, infrequent eating habits, and the emotion sorrow, can all compromise this energy.

*In TCM, each organ is assigned an emotion.

…And so can being exposed to extreme elements of nature too long.

Extensive periods of time spent in damp weather can eventually seep into our Wei Qi and lower the immunity.

Some may need to be exposed for the purpose of their work, i.e., fishing, construction, etcetera.

So What Can You Do?

If you are prone to being in extreme temperatures or conditions for extensive periods of time, there is still help:

1. Cover your body where you can to protect it from wind, damp and cold exposure. Wear a scarf or have it with you to drape over your head or shoulders to avoid too much sun.

Wrap a shawl or heavy scarf over your shoulders, nape of neck and upper back. The upper back “Shu” points are easily attacked with harsh weather. Acupuncturists know it is important to cover these points in order to protect our Wei Qi!

–This is why you notice so many acupuncturists almost always wear a scarf.–

2.Take vitamins, minerals and supplements or herbs that help with immunity.

Read why You NEED Vitamin D Here

3.You can counter this somewhat by getting extra sleep and rest.

Read Acupuncture helps Build Your Immune System Here

4.Eat when your body needs it-and eat more nutritiously dense foods for more energy (and eat with the seasons).

5.Listen to your body when it tells you it’s “break time” or go to bed early, instead of just bullying it into unreasonable demands.

6.Avoid adding extra stressors to your life that are not required of you!

Example, If you are exhausted, stop volunteering.

…You know, less spinning plates to keep up in the air.

–If constant multi-tasking really is a contest… the prize is exhaustion and eventual illness.–

“Follow the Chicken.”

This is really about an everyday healthy, balanced lifestyle.

In TCM we say, “Follow the Chicken.”  This means, live like the chicken lives. Chicken gets up when the sun rises, goes to bed when the sun goes down or if weather tells it that it’s time to seek shelter.

The chicken eats when it is hungry. It doesn’t try to do “just one more thing.”

The chicken takes a rest when it needs to. It does not have electric lights to turn on to extend the day or electronic devices to look at when it should be sleeping.  If you want to avoid burn-out and the sickness that comes with it, go to bed early when you feel like it.

Why did the Chicken cross the Road?

To go home and get tucked into bed early!

For us Minnesotans,  going to bed at 9:00 may be appropriate. It gets dark early at night during the winter months here.

Friday nights when our friends want us to stay out late, it is okay to duck out or “chicken out” early…

-c’mon , admit that I made you smile with that last one-

Our older selves will thank us for caring for this body, maybe tomorrow, maybe next week, maybe even our 80-year-old selves!

Foods to Fortify Lung Qi Energy…

If you are prone to Lung issues

or just want to get ready for the change from Summertime to Fall,

Try Foods that Strengthen Your Lung Qi.

–Eating mostly cooked foods is recommended for Lung Qi Deficiency.–

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Foods to tonify (strengthen) Lung Qi (Energy):

Grains:

  • Amaranth
  • Barley
  • Oats…calming to the spirit

Amaranth is an ancient grain that dries damp, resolves water accumulations from the body.

Pumpkin is warming. It circulates blood, disperses cold, resolves phlegm and dries damp from the body.

Did you know Oats are a natural mild sedative?…

Eat oats for Anxiety. Eat at night if you need help sleeping!

Vegetables:

  • Pumpkin
  • Sweet potato
  • Carrots
  • Pumpkin* technically called a fruit

Fruit:

  • Apples
  • Figs
  • Apricots

Meat/fish:

  • Duck
  • Goose
  • Herring

Nuts:

  • Almonds
  • Walnuts (Also helps Kidney Qi)
  • White sesame seeds* (I know-it’s a seed)

While white sesames help fortify Lung Qi, Black sesame seeds are good for Kidney Qi.

(Kidney Qi = Healthy, shiny hair!)

I put mine in a coffee grinder, as they are more easily absorbed that way.

I like to add black sesames to stir fry, soups and some desserts.

For freshness, grind them fresh each time.

Herbs for the Lungs:

Cinnamon bark

Thyme

Aniseed

Licorice*

Sage

*Ask your doctor before using licorice if prone to blood sugar issues.

Eat according to the Seasons

It is a good idea to eat according to the seasons.

This means eat local foods as they come into season.

It also means eat according to which foods you need medicinally within that season.

How Vitamin D Works in the Body…

First, let’s think of (2) Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency…

I always think of Vitamin D first as “D” for Depression…

That and Low Energy (with Deficiency)

Vitamin D works like a hormone in your body.

Vitamin D Regulates genes in your body.

Vitamin D helps the function of internal organs.

Vitamin D helps the immune system.

Vitamin D Deficiency and COVID-19

  • Avoid abnormal cells from multiplying in tissues of the Breast & Colon-Wow!
  • Helps balance blood sugar levels in the pancreas
  • Helps balance blood pressure in the kidneys
  • Helps calcium absorption (healthy bones, heart, etc)

Read Signs of Vitamin D Deficiency Here

What You Can Do…

  • Get your vitamin d checked at least once per year! Your doctor will order the lab and you will give blood to test your level of d.

  • Those who live in the northern climates and others at risk for d deficiency, you may want to check your lab results in the summer as well as in the fall/winter.

-Some find they need to take it year round.

-Some find they need to increase the dose over time, possibly due to age, health factors and geography.

Many Women Suffer with Mood Changes during Hormonal Shifts

Whether due to Hormonal shifts or situational life changes (or both at once)…

Acupuncture can help with balancing your mood and energy.

Hormonal shifts

Many women feel overwhelmed around perimenopause and menopause.

This can show up as feeling frazzled and tired or “wired & tired.”

You may feel like your mood is not in balance; one minute feeling fine, the next feeling low.

Perimenopause is lasting longer for many these days; sometimes longer than 5 years!

Not to worry-Acupuncture can help balance mood and energy-even sleep!

Life Changes (Situational)

Many of us find ourselves new empty-nesters, newly divorced or helping with elderly parents. Sometimes we are facing this at the very time when our own hormones are shifting. This can be a real challenge.

Do not worry- Acupuncture can help manage the stress.

-Acupuncture helps the body adapt to stress-

How Often Will You Need Treatments?

Treatments start closer together; about once per week.

Then after the mood improves, appointments can be spaced out further.

Most return patients eventually come in regularly, once per month.

Tips for Better Mood & Energy in Perimenopause…

Perimenopause is lasting a while for many women.

…Sometimes Perimenopause lasts longer than 5 years.

Common Symptoms:

  • Easily stressed
  • Hot flashes
  • Mood swings
  • Weight gain
  • Low Energy
  • Poor Sleep
  • Mind fog

Stressed out more?

Hot flashes can start happening during the daytime, night time or both.

Mood swings may look like depression or anxiety or both.

Weight gain usually occurs-especially around the middle (the cardiovascular “danger” zone).

Energy may decrease.

Sleep can get worse and feeling “tired and wired” can make it hard to fall asleep.

Brain fog can make it hard to concentrate at work or in keeping track of appointments, etc.

Prevention can go a long way…

So, you may as well take care of yourself early-on…

Tips for Self-Care:

  • Easy-going Movements
  • Avoid Alcohol
  • Acupuncture
  • Meditate
  • Herbs
  • Diet

Easy-going movements like Walking, Yoga, Tai chi/ Qi gong can help ease us out of Fight-or-Flight mode. Yoga, especially relaxing types such as Yin Yoga can prove helpful during Perimenopause.

Avoiding alcohol, especially if it causes hot flashes or disturbs sleep is a good idea.

I am not saying you need to remove it forever. Just edit it out for a bit to see how you feel.

Maybe you add it back in once the storm has passed.

I routinely like to remove things from life when they are not working for me.

Try it out and see!

Meditation is proven, like acupuncture to move you from the Fight or Flight Sympathetic Nervous System,

to the Rest and Digest Parasympathetic “Relaxed” Nervous System.

In fact, both are proven through research to help lower high blood pressure!

Both Meditation practice and Acupuncture are able to help relax the Nervous System!

Many herbs can be helpful for balancing the body’s hormones and diet is of course, always key to health.

I try to eat a “Low Inflammation” diet as much as possible.

What is YIN versus YANG?

Yin and Yang is a Balancing Act within the Body

Yin and Yang are opposites.

Opposites are part of nature;

Positive vs Negative electrical charges.

Male vs female.

Acupuncture aims to keep Yin and Yang in balance within your body.

Treating Yin vs Yang

And-they are important to Acupuncture within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

This Yin versus Yang is used within disease patterns to determine the treatment protocol.

They are important to Acupuncture; TCM Disease Pattern of Excess vs Deficient.

Examples:

YIN YANG
Female Male
Deficient Excess
Cold Hot
Inner Outer
Quiet Loud
Dark Light
Water Fire
Winter Summer
Asleep Awake

There are also Yin within Yang

and

Yang within Yin…

Examples:

Late/ Early Yin or Yang part of Seasons within a Yin/Yang Season;

Early Winter, Late Winter, Early Summer, Late Summer

Winter is Yin; Summer is Yang

Yin turning to Yang; Sunrise-Light coming up out of Darkness,

Yang turning to Yin; Dusk-Dark settling in from after a Sunset

Keeping Yin and Yang in balance happens when we are in balance.

When we become imbalanced, Excess (Yang) and Deficient (Yin) imbalances happen within the body and organ systems.

Once the imbalance becomes too great, the Yin and Yang separate.

Death happens when the Yin and Yang completely separate.

This is the most extreme example of Yin/Yang Deficiency.

Balance Your Own Body’s Yin & Yang

What Can You do to help balance the Yin and Yang within your own Bod?…

  • Sleep
  • Movement*
  • Bodywork*
  • Eat Locally and according to the Seasons

*I like gentle movements like Walking, Yoga and Qigong or Tai Qi for balancing the body’s energy.

*Bodywork like Acupuncture, Massage and Chiropractic are known to help keep the nervous system balanced.

Movement and Bodywork is something that I schedule very regularly in order to keep the Yin/Yang energy in balance.
