What is a Qi Deficiency-type Headache and How Can You Avoid This Common Headache-type?

Licensed Acupuncturists treat headaches everyday because, well because acupuncture is good at treating headaches and other pain issues.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, a Qi Deficiency-type headache is….

The symptoms of a Qi Deficiency Headache are usually a dull pain in the head which lingers, brought on by physical activity or fatigue. If the Qi Deficiency pattern of disease continues un-checked, it usually progresses into a Blood Deficiency-type Headache (to be explained in a future post)

Is Your Headache a Tension Headache?-Read Here to Find Out

Eat & Rest

Qi Deficiency Headaches can be avoided by eating regular meals on time and taking the time to rest properly. Each individual is different and one must learn in his or her life what works best, i.e., eating every two hours versus every four hours or taking time every day to rest or sleep.

Avoid Stress when possible. Try a daily practice of Mindfulness Meditation if you are dealing with stress.

Read About Mindfulness Meditation Here.

Of course, always be sure to drink enough water! You may have to drag around a water vessel to remember to refill it in order to actually maintain hydration throughout the day. I am a somewhat visual learner and, knowing this about myself I have learned some tricks like this that have really made an impact on my quality of life!

  • Eat regular meals
  • Get enough Sleep/ Rest
  • Avoid Stress
  • Stay Hydrated

Populations Prone to Qi Deficiency Headaches:

We are all different. Some of us have had physical trauma which can tap out our energy reserves faster than others who haven’t, maybe been in a major auto collision or had a major debilitating injury or illness which took time to recover from. We may be prone to becoming more easily fatigued and getting headaches than, say someone who has not experienced these energy-zapping situations. Qi Def. Headaches are more common among older people who are more easily fatigued, those who have had their Qi compromised more by injury or illness, and of course those who constantly burn the candle at both ends!

  • Elderly
  • Physical Trauma History
  • Major Disease/ Illness History
  • Prone to Easily Fatigue
  • Irregular Eating
  • Type A-Personality

Look for your own patterns with your headaches. If you notice headaches do not bother you on the days when you eat more frequently, try to continue eating at that frequency. Perhaps you can keep some raw nuts or a hard-boiled egg with you in a cooler or a nearby refrigerator or in your car (most of the year-if your car is in Minnesota)!

Give Yourself a Break!

It can be hard on the ego for those of us who are movers & shakers and do not want to take the time to rest. I remind my patients-especially women- that YOU must put the oxygen mask on YOURSELF FIRST. If you are going to be any use to anyone else, you must take time for your own self-care. It is a requirement. Your body, mind and HEAD will all thank you! Plus, you will be more effective at getting the important stuff done in your life when you are feeling at the top of your game-by staying well-rested and nourished!

Yes! Acupuncture Really helps with Fibromyalgia

What Can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture helps the Fibromyalgia patient with aching pain in their muscles and joint pain which often accompanies muscle aches. Acupuncture is good at treating pain, even when the pain comes and goes and moves around from place to place.  Acupuncture is good at treating many types of pain, whether due to injury, genetics, congenital (born with), a diagnosed disease or syndrome or for unknown cause.

  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Low Mood

Read How Acupuncture Helps Pain in General Here

Acupuncture can also help with low energy, fatigue and low mood which is often a part of the pain syndrome called Fibromyalgia.

Acupuncture helps muscle pain and joint pain. Many patients with R.A. get relief with acupuncture for their joint pain.

Read How Acupuncture Can Help Joint Pain Here

Acupuncture helps relieve pain and improve mood and energy by helping your body to balance itself. So, the needles do about 20% of the work while your body does the other 80%. Isn’t the body a miraculous thing? It truly wants to get better. Acupuncture can help your body get there. Acupuncture does not cure Fibromyalgia, though it can help you on on your journey of wellness to enjoy a smoother ride with less bumps of aches and pains.

Acupuncture Improves Quality of Life!

Patients come to appointments more frequently at first, then appointments are spread out further and further over time with the same outcome of decreased pain and increased energy and mood. This is because acupuncture builds up within your body with each treatment. Usually patients will come in once or twice per week at first and end up coming in once per month or even once every eight weeks with the same sustained relief that once lasted a few days!

Many find they are able get more done in their day and are able to be more socially active with the added energy and decreased pain after acupuncture treatments! Some patients are happy to finally be able to attend baseball games which they were unable to endure before acupuncture. Others can do hours of gardening or complete their daily household tasks without needing to rest or nap. Many patients have tapered down to taking less daily pain medications and some have even stopped taking their pain medications (under doctor supervision) since having acupuncture treatment.

  • More Physical Activity
  • Increased Social Activity
  • Same Results, Less treatments over time

Yes! Acupuncture Stops Tension Headaches!

What is a Tension Headache?

Tension headaches are the most common of all headache types, usually felt as a constant, dull pain across the forehead or frontal/ forehead area. Tension headaches are not severe or worrisome, though they are annoying.

Causes/ Triggers of Tension Headaches:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Jaw Clenching
  • Poor ergonomics
  • Overworking/ Infrequent meals (typical “Type-A”  American)

Think This May Be Another Type of Headache?..

Read Stop These 5 Headache Types Here

Is This the WORST Headache of Your Life? … Find Out if You Have Cluster Headaches Here!

Why Do I Keep Getting Tension Headaches?

The reason tension headaches are so rampant in the modern world is due to the “rat race” of trying to get it all done. We are all guilty of it at some point in our lives. Clenching the jaw while under deadlines or stressful situations is common with tension headache sufferers. Another reason could be the incorrect work ergonomics at your desk. Acupuncture is great for all types of headaches, including TMJ headaches and for relieving stress and issues which are stress-induced.

What You Can Do:

  • Get to a Licensed Acupuncturist for headaches!
  • Start a daily Mindfulness Meditation Practice
  • Re-evaluate Desk Ergonomics
  • Continue Self Care

Mindfulness meditation is a daily practice to help coax us out of staying constantly in this stressful “striving” mindset. If we stay in this “fight or flight” reactionary place too long, we burn the candle at both ends and become exhausted and suffer disease and dis-ease. This meditation type is aimed at helping to relieve suffering and dis-ease and is used successfully with many struggling with chronic pain and stress to get to a place of feeling more at ease, more often. Find further resources here.

Acupuncture is helpful for relieving headache pain and stress. Many patients come in monthly or seasonally after their main complaints resolve for a “tune-up” appointment to help keep their body in balance.

Self Care like regular meals, hydration and stretching at your desk can serve as muscle tension headache prevention.

If you are like me and can hyper-focus on what you are passionate about for hours without eating or drinking water, you may need to set an alarm in your phone until you get used to taking better care of yourself. Having a container for water handy may be serve as the visual cue to remind you while you work that you are not an android and must hydrate! If you do not, you will quickly remember just how human you are! Dehydration can lead to headaches and that sense of anxiousness, agitated mood or irritability-our body’s way of telling us to take a mini-break, sip and do a Yoga Pose or Two!

Yes! Acupuncture REALLY Works on Sinus Congestion, Sinus Pressure and Sinus Headaches!

Whether Your Sinus issues include headache in the base of the neck, temples, forehead or face, Acupuncture Can help relieve the pain, pressure and congestion!

How Acupuncture Clears Sinus Pressure

Acupuncture helps to remove blockages of Qi within your energy pathways, called channels or meridians.

We can experience physical pain when these channels become “stuck.”

Acupuncture helps move the blocked Qi (pronounced “Chee”) or energy in order to relieve the pain.

We can think of Qi as circulation (this helps my Western mind).

Why Acupuncture For Sinus Congestion Headaches?

Licensed Acupuncturists get to the root cause of your sinus issues to not only provide relief of symptoms, but also to help them from returning.

A 2005 study compared western medications used for chronic sinusitis (antihistamines, decongestants and corticosteroids).

The study found acupuncture to be just as effective as western meds for sinusitis.

As long as patients are compliant with coming in as recommended for acupuncture appointments and follow suggested dietary and lifestyle recommendations, they should see great improvement in chronic sinus issues.

Typically, people notice their nasal passages open quickly during or shortly after their first appointment!

What are Shin Splints?

Shin Splints are small muscle tears at the shin bone attachment, causing pain in front of the lower legs.

Signs and Symptoms of Shin Splints:

  • Shin Pain
  • Usually affects Both Legs
  • Better with Rest, Ice and Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Pain on one or both sides of the shin bone. Pain is usually bilateral (in both legs). Pain gets better with resting, icing and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. If these do not temporarily help, it may be time to call a doctor.

Other runners injuries include Runner’s Knee and ITB  Syndrome.

Causes of Shin Splints:

  • Overuse/ Repetitive Stress Injury
  • Running Too Much
  • Running before Shin Muscles Heal

Shin Splints is usually caused by increasing one’s running distance too quickly. It is considered an Overuse Injury or Repetitive Stress Injury for this reason. Often times  gung-ho, newby runners get caught up in the excitement and euphoria of all of those endorphins flooding the system and think they can run as much as they want! I admit, this was me when I went from NO running to 8 miles and I paid dearly in pain and suffering for it as a teenager on the track team. I also developed Runner’s Knee and had to find the proper shoes for my individual running gait. Perhaps a future post is needed on this?

How to Help Runner’s Knee?

Unfortunately then I did not know about how acupuncture could quicken my recovery time. The athletic PT at the time recommended over-the-counter anti-inflammatory/ pain reducers every four hours for a twenty-four hour period along with icing my shins prior to a big race. Of course, once I got on the track and started running, the endorphins kicked in and would override any pain signals my body was trying to send.

This caused further damage and prolonged the healing time considerably. How do you think I felt once the pain meds wore off? OUCH! Not to mention, any runner can atest to the pain of not being able to run! This can be down-right depressing to a runner. Like no oxygen.

Tips:

  • Stretch!
  • Pain Means Stop Running
  • Wear Proper Running Shoes
  • Increase Running <10% Each Week
  • Take a Day off From Running Each Week
  • Add Cross Training to Balance Strength in all Muscle Groups

Avoid overuse running injury by never increasing your running mileage by more than 10% each week. Including Cross Training every week can help avoid over-stressing and thereby weakening the same muscles (and eventually tendons) over and over and focusing on other muscle groups than what your body is used to allows some groups a recovery time to rest. Remember, if staying on the trail is your goal, balancing your body is key. Nobody wants to be stuck icing and resting on the perfect day!

How Does E-Stim Work with Acupuncture to Decrease Pain and Numbness/ Tingling Sensation?

At a patient’s request, I decided to answer the question of HOW e-stim works with acupuncture on today’s post.

Later, we can answer the Question, “Should I Get E-stim?”…

How E-stimulation Therapy Works…

E-stimulation uses electrical current to cause effect on the tissue being treated.

Often a person’s first experience with e-stim is a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation) unit is with a physical therapist who uses it with pads instead of needles.

To ensure your safety, be sure to always get acupuncture from a LICENSED acupuncturist, just as you would bring your car to a mechanic and your child to a licensed care provider.

E-stim Action:

  • Stimulating the Muscles to Contract
  • Stimulating Nerves
  • Increasing blood flow circulation
  • Lowering inflammation
  • Decreasing Pain
  • Decreasing Spasticity
  • Activate Brainstem & Spinal Cord

-Stimulating nerves acts to decrease pain or to “wake up” the sensation of numbness, usually in extremities.

-Increasing blood flow/ circulation speeds up the healing process.

Other Issues E-stim Treats:

How Acupuncture Can Help TBI Patients

Increasing blood circulation by using e-stimulation with acupuncture helps speed up healing time and lower inflammation.

E-stim for Acute (early onset) Trauma:

E-stim lowers pain & swelling caused by the body trying to repair itself. Sometimes the body gets in its own way of healing when the swelling and inflammation lasts too long, causing pain and discomfort.

E-stim works by stimulating larger nerve fibers to override the smaller nerve fibers which are producing the pain. The “Gate” theory is often used to explain how this pain inhibition works, though it is over-simplified for the complexity of how pain and pain blocking actually works.

E-stim for Severe, Chronic Pain:

E-stim works on Severe, Chronic pain by…

  • Activating Central Nervous System (CNS)
  • Activating beta-Endorphins (Analgesic/ Pain-relieving effect)
  • Activating Enkephalins & Orpahnins (Endorphins which Bind to Opioid receptors to reduce pain/ stress)

Tips:

  1. Avoid the Exercise or Activity that aggravates the pain for a few days and rest.
  2. See a doctor anytime you feel Pain which is Severe with Sudden onset.
  3. Avoid E-stim if Pregnant or have an implantable device such as a pacemaker (your practitioner should do a complete medical intake to avoid contraindications of treatment).

So, Should You Get E-stim?…

Now, You Can Find Out About the Why/ Where/ When/ Who & What of E-stim with Acupuncture Here!
