Ashwagandha for Anxiety!

Ash-what?

Ashwagandha is an Adaptogen herb.

It has been used within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurvedic Medicine for quite some time.

What is an Adaptogen herb?

An adaptogen herb helps the body adapt to stress.

Ashwagandha helps…

  • Anxiety
  • Sleep
  • Stress

Why I like Ashwagandha…

Safety

Ashwagandha is very safe.

Compared with other adaptogens such as Ginkgo or Ginseng, which one should really take a break from using from time to time, Ashwagandha is not like that. Ginseng works somewhat like an upper-Ashwagandha is not like that at all. In fact, some women even take it while nursing, which of course is between the individual and their primary care doctor/ OBGYN doctor.

Effective

Ashwagandha works. It is very effective.

I do like others, such as Rhodiola. Though, Ashwagandha seems to work more often with my patients than Rhodiola.

Long-term

Ashwagandha is safe to use long-term.

Unlike some adaptogen herbs, Ashwagandha does not need to be stopped for a brief period of time, as others like Ginseng do.

Many Women Suffer with Mood Changes during Hormonal Shifts

Whether due to Hormonal shifts or situational life changes (or both at once)…

Acupuncture can help with balancing your mood and energy.

Hormonal shifts

Many women feel overwhelmed around perimenopause and menopause.

This can show up as feeling frazzled and tired or “wired & tired.”

You may feel like your mood is not in balance; one minute feeling fine, the next feeling low.

Perimenopause is lasting longer for many these days; sometimes longer than 5 years!

Not to worry-Acupuncture can help balance mood and energy-even sleep!

Life Changes (Situational)

Many of us find ourselves new empty-nesters, newly divorced or helping with elderly parents. Sometimes we are facing this at the very time when our own hormones are shifting. This can be a real challenge.

Do not worry- Acupuncture can help manage the stress.

-Acupuncture helps the body adapt to stress-

How Often Will You Need Treatments?

Treatments start closer together; about once per week.

Then after the mood improves, appointments can be spaced out further.

Most return patients eventually come in regularly, once per month.

Tips for Better Mood & Energy in Perimenopause…

Perimenopause is lasting a while for many women.

…Sometimes Perimenopause lasts longer than 5 years.

Common Symptoms:

  • Easily stressed
  • Hot flashes
  • Mood swings
  • Weight gain
  • Low Energy
  • Poor Sleep
  • Mind fog

Stressed out more?

Hot flashes can start happening during the daytime, night time or both.

Mood swings may look like depression or anxiety or both.

Weight gain usually occurs-especially around the middle (the cardiovascular “danger” zone).

Energy may decrease.

Sleep can get worse and feeling “tired and wired” can make it hard to fall asleep.

Brain fog can make it hard to concentrate at work or in keeping track of appointments, etc.

Prevention can go a long way…

So, you may as well take care of yourself early-on…

Tips for Self-Care:

  • Easy-going Movements
  • Avoid Alcohol
  • Acupuncture
  • Meditate
  • Herbs
  • Diet

Easy-going movements like Walking, Yoga, Tai chi/ Qi gong can help ease us out of Fight-or-Flight mode. Yoga, especially relaxing types such as Yin Yoga can prove helpful during Perimenopause.

Avoiding alcohol, especially if it causes hot flashes or disturbs sleep is a good idea.

I am not saying you need to remove it forever. Just edit it out for a bit to see how you feel.

Maybe you add it back in once the storm has passed.

I routinely like to remove things from life when they are not working for me.

Try it out and see!

Meditation is proven, like acupuncture to move you from the Fight or Flight Sympathetic Nervous System,

to the Rest and Digest Parasympathetic “Relaxed” Nervous System.

In fact, both are proven through research to help lower high blood pressure!

Both Meditation practice and Acupuncture are able to help relax the Nervous System!

Many herbs can be helpful for balancing the body’s hormones and diet is of course, always key to health.

I try to eat a “Low Inflammation” diet as much as possible.

Grief Relief

Relief from Grief…

Grief Relief

Ways to Find Relief During Grief

All of us deal with grief, eventually.

Grief is a difficult journey.

The only way through, is through.

Here are a few healthy tools to help us deal with it…

One tool is Acupuncture treatment…

Acupuncture treatments can be tailored to help You handle Grief.

Acupuncture can help lower the intensity of our raw emotions, can help with anxiety and with more sound sleep.

This is because Acupuncture helps our bodies move out of Fight or Flight within the Sympathetic Nervous System

-into Rest and Digest within the Para Sympathetic Nervous System.

Other ways to deal with Grief:

  • Books on Grief
  • Talking with a trusting friend with good listening skills
  • Joining an in-person or online support group
  • Movement: Yoga, Qigong/ Tai Qi and Walking
  • Music
  • Talk therapist (some specialize in Grief)
  • Meditation

Books on dealing with Grief that I recommend:

On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief through the Five Stages of Loss  -Kubler-Ross and Kessler

Love Pain: Stories of Loss and Survival-Lynn Jaffee

It’s OK That You’re NOT OK: Meeting Grief and Loss in a Culture that Doesn’t Understand -Megan Devine

Comfort for the Grieving Parent’s Heart -Gary Roe

-What I like about the book On Grief and Grieving by Kubler-Ross and Kessler is used by many psychotherapists and does not adhere to the outdated idea of having to go through the stages of grief in a particular order.

-The book Love Pain: Stories of Loss and Survival by Lynn Jaffee is written in a unique way and it quickly shines a light on what makes us human, what matters most to us all. Jaffee shows us that we can survive grief-though we feel that we will not!

-Devine’s book, It’s OK That You’re Not OK helps one to deal with others who don’t respond in helpful ways to our grief. They mean well, but may end up hurting us further with their well-meaning comments. It also gives us permission to take the time we need to go through the grieving process. Yes, it is a process.

Other Grief Resources to try:

If you belong to a church, university, or other community group,

reach out to them and ask about resources they may have available to you.

Many have free grief counseling.

Meditation is a life-long tool that is free to us. More info on Meditation Resources Here.

–Remember, we are social creatures.

We need help once in a while to get back up.

That is O.K.

In fact, it is healthy to ask for help in this case.

Four Ways Acupuncture Helps Hot flashes and Night Sweats

  1. Triggers more positive mood (by activating endorphin pathways)-May help you deal better with symptoms!
  2. Decreases secretion of calcitonin (neuropeptide that causes vasodilation) *vasodilation triggers warm body temperature
  3. Increases melatonin
  4. Prompts Your Body to Return back to Homeostasis *Homeostasis= condition of optimal functioning for an organism

Most Patients suffering with hot flashes report less frequency and less intense symptoms after acupuncture.

How Acupuncture Helps Hot Flashes

Acupuncture triggers a more positive mood by activating endorphin pathways. Patients can move from anxiety, depression and irritability to feeling chill and relaxed.

Acupuncture prompts the body to decrease vasodilation in order to reduce heat and perspiration in the body, helping the individual both day and night.

Acupuncture increases Melatonin, the sleep hormone necessary for sound sleep. Melatonin is disturbed during hot flashes and night sweats occurring at night.

This is why many get acupuncture for Insomnia!

Acupuncture helps the body return to its natural, healthy state of homeostasis. Homeostasis is the condition of optimal functioning for an organism.

Another example of this is when acupuncture lowers blood pressure in someone with high blood pressure.

Why Your Anxiety Worsens in Spring… Liver Yang is Rising!

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory,

Your Qi (Energy) in the body (and other creatures & plants) is affected by Spring time.

Spring time is the start of increased “Yang” Energy.

Yang Energy (versus the opposite, Yin) brings upward, sometimes a quick, rushing movement.

The Liver is the organ in TCM of Spring time.

The Liver is easily “Angered.”

The Liver can easily “attack” other organs.

Example: Liver attacks Stomach (Acid Reflux or Vertigo)

What this Means?…

Increased:

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Anger
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Digestive Upset

What You Can Do to Ground Yourself…

  • Stand barefooted on the ground outside (when conditions permit)
  • Breathing exercises
  • Qi Gong exercises
  • Acupuncture
  • Yoga Poses

Yoga poses: Tree Pose & Warrior II

-Get in for Acupuncture to treat Spring time Insomnia, Anxiety, Acid Reflux and Headaches.

Applying Essential oil to Acupuncture Points for Sleep:

Sometimes I like to apply peppermint or lavender essential oil to the bottoms of the feet on K-1 acupuncture point.

(see last post on Acupuncture Points to Massage at Home for Sleep)

Using a cotton ball or a cotton swab can avoid getting the oil into your eyes later!

Trust me-avoiding peppermint oil in the eyes will also ensure better sleep.

Massaging the essential oil into the soles of your feet at this point helps bring the “Qi” or energy down from the head

(over-thinking) and into the feet. This can help us to feel more grounded and relaxed and ready for sleep.

Also, I believe the sheer ritual of rubbing oil into the feet can be soothing to the mind.

It is almost like the mind can relax in knowing we are taking care of the body and it is okay to stop thinking now.

This is why it is part of my bedtime routine.

Many of my patients ask which brand I use…I like to use Aura Cacia brand for essential oils since they are mostly organic and are a local MN company (support local). I also really like Posumon Chinese herbal peppermint oil.

This is what I use in treatments.

Po sum on Chinese herbal peppermint oil can be ordered for purchase, if you would like.

*Carrier Oils to use with essential oils:

  • Olive oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Sweet Almond oil
  • Castor oil (hexane-free)

I like to use castor oil for feet and hair and sometimes add a bit to my facial oil.

Just be sure to use unrefined and organic oils.

*Carrier oils are used to “carry” the essential oil.

This is what the bulk amount of oil is made of in essential oil remedies.

3 DIY Acupuncture (AcuPressure) Points for Sleep…

Massaging these three points before bed can help ease you into sleep.

These are the same acupuncture points licensed acupuncturists may use if your main complaint is Insomnia.

Acupuncture Points to Massage for Sleep:

  1. AnMian -This acupuncture point translates into “Peaceful Sleep”…

Location: behind the head, midway between GB20 (where your finger sinks in behind the base of the skull)

and TB-17 (right behind the ear lobe). This point is used often by me in my practice for patients with Insomnia.

Locate AnMian between these two points.

2. Kidney 1- This is a very grounding point…

Location: bottom (sole) of the foot, right under the pad.

This is at the lower border of the top 1/3 of the foot.

This point may be a bit tender and your finger may easily slide into this space.

3. Kidney 3- This is a great point for both Kidney Yang Deficiency and Kidney Yin Deficiency.

It both nourishes Kidney Yin and tonifies (strengthens) Kidney Yang.

I use this versatile point often.

What is Yin vs Yang? (check back–we will explore in a future post)!…

Location: Behind the inner ankle bone, between the medial (outer) malleolus (ankle bone) and the Achilles tendon.

There you have it- 3 Acupuncture Points You can do AcuPressure on at Home for Better Sleep.

Allow an extra 10-minutes every night before bed.

Climb into bed and gently massage each area for about 30 seconds, then go to the next point.

Repeat the sequence a few times, if needed, using essential oil if desired….Then catch some Zzzzzz’s!

Is Your Depression Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Acupuncture is helpful to those with CFS.

Chronic Fatigue includes long-term extreme tiredness which does not respond appropriately to rest.

Does the following sound like you? …

  • Lower Immunity (prone to infection and illness)
  • Easily stressed (adrenal issues)
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Multiple body systems affected

Acupuncture Helps Chronic Fatigue.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a complex illness. It affects many systems in the body. It is called a “Syndrome” because we are not yet smart enough to understand all the signs and symptoms enough to call it a “disease.” This can be very frustrating to the individual. Doctors and other practitioners are getting better at recognizing CFS and other syndromes that affect the energy.

Acupuncture is good at improving energy and syndromes such as CFS fit within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) patterns so your acupuncturist can treat you under this pattern to help you to start feeling better.
