Closing Clinic End of December 2022

After 8 years of serving Anoka with Acupuncture (4 years as Aleesha D Acupuncture),

it is with a heavy heart (and an open mind), that I step away and move onto the next adventure.

As of December 19, 2022 I, Aleesha Kaplan, L.Ac. am closing my acupuncture practice

and will no longer see patients at the current location.

Current Patients: My aim is to continue to provide quality care to you through December 19, 2022.

Continuing acupuncture care is important and I can provide names of providers who I feel may be a good fit for individuals.

I am grateful you have found me. My hope is that you find value in my posts that I enjoy writing and sharing with you!

Take extra special care of yourself,

Aleesha Kaplan

Foods for Glowing Skin and More…

Looking to Feeling Better AND Look Better, too?…

Look to Foods that help repair collagen, the connective tissues in the face and body.

It only makes sense that these same foods help lower inflammation and pain to help lower:

  • Joint pain
  • Headaches
  • General aches and Pains

Read Acupuncture & Other Tips for Joint Pain Here

Foods that have:

  • Color variety
  • Fiber
  • EFA’s
  • Water
  • Antioxidants
  • Antibiotic-free
  • Additives-free

Choose natural foods (not packaged nor over-refined).

Eat High fiber, natural foods such as many vegetables like peppers and avocados and pumpkin seeds.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) are necessary to hold up collagen to avoid severe wrinkles and breaking down of tissues in the body (Fish oil, nut oils, etc.)

  • Flax seed/ Flax oil
  • Sardines
  • Mackerel
  • Salmon
  • Walnuts
  • Pumpkin seeds

Foods in many (natural) colors:

-Eat colorful, antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries, raspberries (especially for fertility), spinach, kale, peppers

(unless you must avoid nightshades).

Avoid food color additives  (unless natural colorings such as beet juice powder)

Choose foods like avocados that are rich in fiber and good fat (easy to make guacamole in minutes to dip celery into)

Bell peppers in green, red, yellow and orange make great dipping replacements for chips and go well with hummus. Make your own to avoid hydrogenated oils, too!

Pumpkin seeds are high in EFA’s, fiber and Zinc (great for immunity).

Foods High in h20:

Foods high in water content plump the skin all over the body and help avoid dehydration and premature wrinkles.

Hydration also flushes the body, helping keep excess salt from damaging the internal organs, such as the kidneys…

–When kidneys have to overwork due to too much salt, kidneys may be  unable to remove enough water in the body; high blood pressure may result.

Avoid meats with antibiotics and additives:

Avoid foods with chemical additives such as added nitrates/nitrites used in deli meats and cheeses (naturally-occurring and celery-based is okay).

These unnatural added nitrates/nitrites can lead to things like gout which is very painful!

Aleesha Ackerman, LAc treats fine facial wrinkles using the famous cosmetic acupuncture protocol of Mei Zen.

This protocol is also known as My Zen. This cosmetic facial acupuncture protocol is the only protocol that uses more than fifty needles inserted into the face with acupuncture needles inserted elsewhere in the body. Not to worry-these needles are tiny!

This cosmetic facial treatment that treats the entire body, not just the face.

So, we are addressing other systems in the body simultaneously as needed. Digestion for instance, may need some care shown to it during the treatment. This protocol treats your face and your body…It truly is a two-for-one acupuncture treatment!

What Are People Saying About Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture?

Patients report to me that their friends and relatives remark on how happy and healthy they look.

Then their friends ask them what they are doing differently.

They ask if they have changed their diet or started an exercise routine.

What Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture is…

Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture uses tiny acupuncture needles which are placed in the face.

These needles create “micro injuries” which tells the body to build collagen in the needled area.

More needles placed in more areas, means more collagen-building.

Large quantity of needles ensures that more surface area of the face is addressed.

The Mei Zen protocol is the only one to use this many needles!

At Aleesha D Acupuncture, the Mei Zen protocol is used on for Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture.

Acupuncture Increases IUI Fertility Success!

Acupuncture has been shown in studies to improve Fertility Percentage

Have You had 1 or 2 Failed IUI Fertility Treatments?

In general, only 3 rounds of IUI are attempted before IVF is seen as the next step.

IVF is more expensive and invasive and this is why IUI is often tried first.

If you are going on your 3rd round of IUI Fertility Treatments,

Get Acupuncture 1-2 times weekly before starting the process.

Acupuncture Increases IUI Fertility Success!

When Should You Get Acupuncture for Fertility?

Start Acupuncture Three Months Before Fertility Treatment, if possible.

I like to see patients this often for Fertility:

Once weekly if starting 3 months before IUI.

Twice weekly if starting 1-2 months before IUI.

Why Start Acupuncture Before IUI Fertility Treatments?

Acupuncture is often called the “Slow Medicine”

And-it Works!

It takes about two-four months before ovulation to improve egg quality.

(Egg quality can only be improved before ovulation, not after).

Ashwagandha for Anxiety!

Ash-what?

Ashwagandha is an Adaptogen herb.

It has been used within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurvedic Medicine for quite some time.

What is an Adaptogen herb?

An adaptogen herb helps the body adapt to stress.

Ashwagandha helps…

  • Anxiety
  • Sleep
  • Stress

Why I like Ashwagandha…

Safety

Ashwagandha is very safe.

Compared with other adaptogens such as Ginkgo or Ginseng, which one should really take a break from using from time to time, Ashwagandha is not like that. Ginseng works somewhat like an upper-Ashwagandha is not like that at all. In fact, some women even take it while nursing, which of course is between the individual and their primary care doctor/ OBGYN doctor.

Effective

Ashwagandha works. It is very effective.

I do like others, such as Rhodiola. Though, Ashwagandha seems to work more often with my patients than Rhodiola.

Long-term

Ashwagandha is safe to use long-term.

Unlike some adaptogen herbs, Ashwagandha does not need to be stopped for a brief period of time, as others like Ginseng do.

Grief Relief

Relief from Grief…

Grief Relief

Ways to Find Relief During Grief

All of us deal with grief, eventually.

Grief is a difficult journey.

The only way through, is through.

Here are a few healthy tools to help us deal with it…

One tool is Acupuncture treatment…

Acupuncture treatments can be tailored to help You handle Grief.

Acupuncture can help lower the intensity of our raw emotions, can help with anxiety and with more sound sleep.

This is because Acupuncture helps our bodies move out of Fight or Flight within the Sympathetic Nervous System

-into Rest and Digest within the Para Sympathetic Nervous System.

Other ways to deal with Grief:

  • Books on Grief
  • Talking with a trusting friend with good listening skills
  • Joining an in-person or online support group
  • Movement: Yoga, Qigong/ Tai Qi and Walking
  • Music
  • Talk therapist (some specialize in Grief)
  • Meditation

Books on dealing with Grief that I recommend:

On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief through the Five Stages of Loss  -Kubler-Ross and Kessler

Love Pain: Stories of Loss and Survival-Lynn Jaffee

It’s OK That You’re NOT OK: Meeting Grief and Loss in a Culture that Doesn’t Understand -Megan Devine

Comfort for the Grieving Parent’s Heart -Gary Roe

-What I like about the book On Grief and Grieving by Kubler-Ross and Kessler is used by many psychotherapists and does not adhere to the outdated idea of having to go through the stages of grief in a particular order.

-The book Love Pain: Stories of Loss and Survival by Lynn Jaffee is written in a unique way and it quickly shines a light on what makes us human, what matters most to us all. Jaffee shows us that we can survive grief-though we feel that we will not!

-Devine’s book, It’s OK That You’re Not OK helps one to deal with others who don’t respond in helpful ways to our grief. They mean well, but may end up hurting us further with their well-meaning comments. It also gives us permission to take the time we need to go through the grieving process. Yes, it is a process.

Other Grief Resources to try:

If you belong to a church, university, or other community group,

reach out to them and ask about resources they may have available to you.

Many have free grief counseling.

Meditation is a life-long tool that is free to us. More info on Meditation Resources Here.

–Remember, we are social creatures.

We need help once in a while to get back up.

That is O.K.

In fact, it is healthy to ask for help in this case.

Apply Heat or Ice to Pain?

Should You Apply Heat or Ice to an Injury?

Apply Heat or Ice to Pain?

Athlete tying shoe at Anoka Acupuncture

I often get this question from patients.

The answer is: It depends who you ask…

Acupuncturists will say to apply heat to the aching area; Chiropractors and PT’s will say to apply ice.

My answer is: It depends How Long after the Injury

My other answer is: (After a couple of days)  It depends How You as an Individual Respond.

What I tell my patients is…

Within 24-48 hours Post-Injury:

Apply Ice.

Apply ice* to the area of sprain or strain or bruised area within the first 24-48 hours.

This is because it will help keep swelling and inflammation down.

A friend of mine lives in the UP.

She sprained her ankle.

…She was a lucky duck to be at the beach… on the BIG Lake (Superior)

…She was a smart enough duck to realize getting into this natural ice bath would keep it from becoming a balloon!

She was able to put her shoes back on because the foot had not become enormous from swelling.

*Be sure to use a protective barrier like a washcloth between your skin and the ice.

*Be sure to limit time it is applied to avoid skin damage.

After 1-2 days:

Apply Heat.

The reason acupuncturists like using heat instead of ice with injuries is that cold congeals. Cold makes the muscle clench up.

That is what we are trying to avoid.

…This is why we like to take a hot shower or

Get in the hot tub to relax.

No one says, “Who wants to get in the Cold tub!?”

Muscle spasms due to over-working and injuries, old and new like heat. Heat relaxes. Heat loosens up tight muscles.

Except within the first 24-48 hours (use ice then).

How does Heat or Cold Work on You?

After 24-48 hours, it depends whether or not heat or cold helps you as an individual.

Everyone is different. Ice may really help one person, whereas another may find it worsens symptoms, even after 24-48 hours.

Did you know?-Acupuncture is good for helping heal more quickly after a sprain or strain?

What is YIN versus YANG?

Yin and Yang is a Balancing Act within the Body

Yin and Yang are opposites.

Opposites are part of nature;

Positive vs Negative electrical charges.

Male vs female.

Acupuncture aims to keep Yin and Yang in balance within your body.

Treating Yin vs Yang

And-they are important to Acupuncture within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

This Yin versus Yang is used within disease patterns to determine the treatment protocol.

They are important to Acupuncture; TCM Disease Pattern of Excess vs Deficient.

Examples:

YIN YANG
Female Male
Deficient Excess
Cold Hot
Inner Outer
Quiet Loud
Dark Light
Water Fire
Winter Summer
Asleep Awake

There are also Yin within Yang

and

Yang within Yin…

Examples:

Late/ Early Yin or Yang part of Seasons within a Yin/Yang Season;

Early Winter, Late Winter, Early Summer, Late Summer

Winter is Yin; Summer is Yang

Yin turning to Yang; Sunrise-Light coming up out of Darkness,

Yang turning to Yin; Dusk-Dark settling in from after a Sunset

Keeping Yin and Yang in balance happens when we are in balance.

When we become imbalanced, Excess (Yang) and Deficient (Yin) imbalances happen within the body and organ systems.

Once the imbalance becomes too great, the Yin and Yang separate.

Death happens when the Yin and Yang completely separate.

This is the most extreme example of Yin/Yang Deficiency.

Balance Your Own Body’s Yin & Yang

What Can You do to help balance the Yin and Yang within your own Bod?…

  • Sleep
  • Movement*
  • Bodywork*
  • Eat Locally and according to the Seasons

*I like gentle movements like Walking, Yoga and Qigong or Tai Qi for balancing the body’s energy.

*Bodywork like Acupuncture, Massage and Chiropractic are known to help keep the nervous system balanced.

Movement and Bodywork is something that I schedule very regularly in order to keep the Yin/Yang energy in balance.
