Q: How BIG are Acupuncture Needles?

Needle size shown

Often times I get asked by new patients and people in general,

“How BIG Are those (Acupuncture) Needles?”

A: Smaller than You May Think!

Acupuncture needles are 1/10th the gauge (thickness) of a hypodermic needle used to administer a vaccine.

So, 10 acupuncture needles can fit inside of the needle used for a tetanus shot.

The Long and Short of It:

Q: How Long are Acupuncture Needles?

A: It depends…

As far as length, they are quite varied.

Some are as short as 1/2 inch, some are longer than 3 inches.

The Short…

Acupuncture needles that are on the shorter side are used for areas like the face and even the feet.

Short acupuncture needles can also be used on smaller framed bodies or more frail or sensitive individuals.

The Long…

I typically use longer length needles around 3 inches to treat Sciatica pain.

This is because a longer needle is needed in order to get past the adipose (fat tissue) layer, down into the muscle and the area where the sciatic nerve is inflamed in the hip/ buttock area.

This helps lower the inflammation around the nerve to relieve the pain and numbness.

In Summary

Acupuncture needles come in all varieties. Some are used for dry needling, some for increasing collagen production in the face.
