By the way, ginger tea may be helpful for nausea. Just be sure it is not too concentrated or it can actually cause a stomach ache for some.

As always, check with your doctor first before adding ginger tea to your diet regime, if you have a condition or take medications that could interact.

Ashwagandha for Anxiety!

Ash-what?

Ashwagandha is an Adaptogen herb.

It has been used within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurvedic Medicine for quite some time.

What is an Adaptogen herb?

An adaptogen herb helps the body adapt to stress.

Ashwagandha helps…

  • Anxiety
  • Sleep
  • Stress

Why I like Ashwagandha…

Safety

Ashwagandha is very safe.

Compared with other adaptogens such as Ginkgo or Ginseng, which one should really take a break from using from time to time, Ashwagandha is not like that. Ginseng works somewhat like an upper-Ashwagandha is not like that at all. In fact, some women even take it while nursing, which of course is between the individual and their primary care doctor/ OBGYN doctor.

Effective

Ashwagandha works. It is very effective.

I do like others, such as Rhodiola. Though, Ashwagandha seems to work more often with my patients than Rhodiola.

Long-term

Ashwagandha is safe to use long-term.

Unlike some adaptogen herbs, Ashwagandha does not need to be stopped for a brief period of time, as others like Ginseng do.

Why Your Anxiety Worsens in Spring… Liver Yang is Rising!

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory,

Your Qi (Energy) in the body (and other creatures & plants) is affected by Spring time.

Spring time is the start of increased “Yang” Energy.

Yang Energy (versus the opposite, Yin) brings upward, sometimes a quick, rushing movement.

The Liver is the organ in TCM of Spring time.

The Liver is easily “Angered.”

The Liver can easily “attack” other organs.

Example: Liver attacks Stomach (Acid Reflux or Vertigo)

What this Means?…

Increased:

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Anger
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Digestive Upset

What You Can Do to Ground Yourself…

  • Stand barefooted on the ground outside (when conditions permit)
  • Breathing exercises
  • Qi Gong exercises
  • Acupuncture
  • Yoga Poses

Yoga poses: Tree Pose & Warrior II

Acupuncture for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or PTS…

PTS(D) has been shortened to PTS.

Drop the “D” and Drop the Stigma.

This is a VERY REAL issue that more folks than you think (and their loved ones) must deal with.

Why Acupuncture for PTS:

  • Sleep
  • Energy
  • Anxiety
  • Drug-free
  • Mild to Moderate Depression

Most report on how much better their sleep is after Acupuncture.

Anxiety and Depression improves. Energy gets better.

Brain fog and memory around fuzzy thinking seems to lift along with the mood.

Overall, PTS patients report improvement in their Quality of Life (QOL).

Most people now days are looking for a drug-free alternative for their PTS issues. Acupuncture provides that medical alternative. Licensed acupuncturists pay a state medical tax to provide acupuncture medical therapy.

Findings of PTSD Research & Acupuncture on Depression, Anxiety and Impairment…

  1. Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) shows Acupuncture improvement in PTSD compared to a Waitlist Control Group with no improvement.
  2. Therapeutic effects on PTSD of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acupuncture was about the same.
  3. Research shows Acupuncture and SSRI treatment had no significant difference.

SSRI’s are a class of  seretonin Reuptake Inhibitors anti-depressant drugs.

SSRI’s are the most commonly prescribed anti-depressants. They treat moderate to severe depression.

   4. More Trials are needed in order to prove what the evidence suggests on how acupuncture can improve PTS(D) issues. This is how science works. We need to be able to measure the same thing over and over and over again in order to prove that something works the way the evidence seems to indicate.

More money is spent on researching Acupuncture and Pain relief. The U.S.A. military has spent a lot on studying acupuncture and pain.

One pain protocol that I use at times for severe pain was started by the military and is called, “Battlefield Acupuncture.”

Interestingly enough, I only claim acupuncture can help with mild to moderate depression. This is because not enough research is available as of yet to show it significantly helping with severe depression. This is also because acupuncture is not a replacement for prescribed antidepressants. One must always work with one’s doctor before tapering from prescribed medications.

EFT Tapping Acupressure Points for Anxiety (Same Points Used in Acupuncture)!

Did You Know EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Tapping uses Acupuncture Points for Anxiety?

It’s True!

This is Helpful to go along with our AcuPRESSURE sessions (Patients doing the 1-on-1 Free Video Sessions with me during the COVID-19 Pandemic while we Stay-at-Home to help flatten the curve).

These are points you can use at home to help move from Fight-or-Flight back into the Rest and Digest

aka “chilling in a hammock” state of being.

This can help in all types of situations, not only during a scary, stay-at-home-we are in a Pandemic” kind of situation!

For the point of this simple version (and because I do not care for doing the self-talk therapy along with it), we will leave out the affirmation/ self-talking part of the technique.

That is the beauty in most things in life, if ya don’t like part of something or it just doesn’t work for you, you can leave it out. Stick with what works! GET IT? “STICK!” Never mind.

You shouldn’t be sticking yourself with needles anyway-unless you are a licensed acupuncturist like me, of course or a phlebotomist or a nurse (by the way, acupuncture needles are not hollow like a hypodermic used by a nurse because it does not need to carry anything like a vaccine into your body.

That is why some call it “DRY NEEDLING.” It is also why the needles acupuncturists use do not hurt the way the hypodermic needles do-well that and you can fit like 10 acupuncture needles into a hypodermic! They are about 1/10 the diameter or thickness so WAY more comfortable!

So as to not get off track…

EFT Tapping-How to:

To do the EFT Tapping on acupuncture points (OR for you, acuPRESSURE),

Tap Points: Simply tap lightly with a finger on each point. Be gentle. You don’t have to leave a mark to be effective. More pressure is not better, necessarily.

Sequence of Points: I like to go in order of  outer hand, below pinky finger (at 2nd crease) aka the “karate chop” point. You know, right where you strike when you karate chop all those wooden boards in your garage (or in your mind if not trained), then top of head, going in downward direction to each point, ending at side of torso/ under the arm.

# of Taps Per Point: Tap each point 5-7 times. Then go on to next point.

How Many Times Should I tap the sequence of points?

Rinse and Repeat.

You can repeat this as many times as needed until you feel more chill. Let your Highstrung-ometer be your guide to how many times to repeat in one session.  Sometimes I like to do this in traffic, like when another driver tries to kill me by cutting me off or  driving so close behind that I cannot see the first 1/3 of their car (and cannot move any further than the bumper in front of me).

Or-like now during a friggin’ PANDEMIC!

—Who is NOT Stressed?

Some of us, pendulate back and forth between a healthy state of,

“I’m okay, You’re Okay” to “OMG-When will Life EVER Go Back to some type of NORMAL again?”

I digress. Again. What can I say? I’m a story teller. A close friend recently told me that one of the things her husband really likes about me is my story-telling ability!

Wow, that really FELT GOOD to hear!

Back to it: So like I said, repeat as many times as possible. Some like to talk about what is bugging them while doing this. I am not one of those. I like to keep things As Simple As Possible. Lots of other stuff can’t be simplified. I believe THIS can be simple.

I DO like to work on breathing techniques. This can cause more anxiety, however if you find you start trying to control the breath or the mind starts to ask you, “Are You SURE You’re DOING this RIGHT??!”

Don’t get stuck! Get it? Okay, okay. I’ll stop.

…So, if you find focus on breath is more of a hassle at  first, leave it out. Remember, as with most thing, you gotta do what works for you. We have all self-soothed with a healthy tool, only to start going down a dark rabbit hole of over-thinking!…

There are a lotta tools in life. Use the best tool that works for you. Lefties  don’t like Right-handed scissors for a reason!

Do not Overthink it!

Find Other Meditation/ Breathing Techniques Here

Does it Matter Which Side You Do First?

You can do one side, then alternate to the other.

You can do left side a couple times, then right side.

For some points you can choose the side with the most tender spot (under the clavicle or collar bone). This is often tender while feeling anxious.

Recap:

  1. Starting with Karate chop point on hand. Then at top of head, progressing down body to last point which is located under arm.
  2. Tap each point gently about 5-7 times each.
  3. Repeat sequence as many times as you need.
  4. Keep reading my posts and leave some feedback here!

Thanks for Reading!

Check back next week for some Qi Gong (“Chee Gong”). If you are a patient of mine, it will pair well with our Free Video 1-on-1’s during the COVID-19 stay-at-home time!

Did you know that 90% of the time Low Thyroid is Hashimoto’s?

–What Can I Work on (Lifestyle)?–

Diet / Acupuncture and other healing modalities/ Movement/ Meditation/ Supplements/ Sleep…

ACUPUNCTURE: When Acupuncture is Good for Your Thyroid

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that acupuncture can be used to treat thyroid disease.

DIET: How can we choose to eat healthy foods that support a low thyroid when the information out there is always changing and there are so many telling us to eat Paleo! or Eat Vegetarian! or Eat Vegan! or Eat Keto!…

Well, I find it easier to think of foods in terms of…

LOW INFLAMMATION DIET.

So, why eat a Low Inflammation Diet?… Well, as you know Disease is caused by Inflammation.

So what is Inflammation, really?…Well, think of it as a fire. The fire does not go away. It continues to burn…

It becomes chronic…

This chronic, burning inflammation or fire can manifest as skin irritations or with joint pain…Especially if you have been diagnosed with Thyroid Disease or really, any disease. Even when the fire is kept low by good lifestyle, it can continue to smolder. It is our job to keep it down and not add fuel to the fire with high inflammation foods or other stressors which can trigger stress responses in the body, and affect the thyroid.

Low Inflammation Foods include good, quality fats and proteins, green leafy vegetables and non-processed, non-packaged foods. Good Low Inflammation Fat Examples include: Quality fats like Raw nuts, seeds, extra virgin olive oil, unrefined coconut oil, ghee/ clarified butter/ grass-fed butter, rendered fats like rendered duck fat. Be sure to check first with your doctor before starting a new diet.

High Inflammation Foods include things like gluten, refined sugars, simple carbs (think bread products). Even eating a small bite of glutinous food will create inflammation in the body that lasts months. Once we stop eating it and find we can cook and bake other delicious alternatives and avoid all the pain and suffering, avoiding these inflammatory foods becomes easier. I liken it to returning to an abusive relationship and use this example with my patients: we think this time will be different-this time I can handle it-I am stronger somehow this time-last time wasn’t so bad-this time I won’t get burned or hurt-and yet we always do-and it gets worse each time until some of us become very broken and unhealthy. It is our job to look out for our bodies and minds so that we can stay healthy.

Supplements: More than likely You are Low in Magnesium (especially with low thyroid)…

Read the 7 Signs of Magnesium Deficiency

Often Progesterone is Low with Low Thyroid. (Interestingly enough, Magnesium helps the body with Progesterone balance). So, supplementing with Magnesium is usually a good thing. Read Here Why You Probably Don’t get Enough Magnesium

MOVEMENT: Moving the body improves both mind and body, whatever ails you. Specifically for thyroid, good forms of exercise include: Yoga, Qi Gong, Walking and perhaps Jogging or Running. Be sure to check first with your doctor before starting any exercise routine.

SLEEP: Sleep is crucial to our health and well-being and can help stave off disease. We now know the effects poor sleep can have on the brain…

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), Sleep deprivation increases Alzheimer’s protein in the brain.

Basically, the protein plaques which are cleaned up during sleep, are not cleaned up due to lack of quality sleep.

I think of the little yellow Pac-Man (gobbling up all the bad plaque in my brain at night when I sleep) and this usually gets my butt to bed in time for 8 hours of sleep. What can I say?- I am a very visual learner.

If visual is one of your more dominant learning styles, you may choose to adopt this method of getting yourself to bed earlier, too!

I am all about doing what works for us as individuals to make ourselves compliant on the big stuff.

–Hey, sometimes we have to convince the little kid in us that it really is time for bed!

CBD Oil for Chronic Pain

What is CBD?

CBD is an alternative Pain/ Inflammation Relief available to the public. CBD is taken in a variety of forms.

At first, I was hesitant to carry anything CBD because I figured it was just another fad (snake oil) without much research to back up the claims of it being effective.

Boy, was I wrong… After trying it myself on my neck around my occipital muscles and avoiding muscle tension pain and muscle knots- I was hooked!

This is when I decided to start carrying CBD varieties and offering this magic inflammation-reducer remedy to my patients-who mostly come in for Chronic pain and chronic issues such as Sleep, Headaches and Anxiety.

At Aleesha D Acupuncture, CBD is sold as Oil taken internally, Ointment and Stick (the latter two apply externally to the skin)

  • Oil
  • Ointment (cream)
  • Stick.

Cream or Stick Use: Pain, Chronic Pain in Muscles or Joints.

Use on: The stick is good for travel, in a gym bag and reaching areas like the back and feet.

Oral Oil Use: Anxiety, Sleep, 2nd Vehicle for Major, Chronic Pain (use with Cream or Stick for Pain for best effect). This is sublingual oil, meaning it goes under the tongue.

Why Try CBD for Chronic Pain & Other Issues:

CBD is non-habit-forming so one will not become addicted to CBD as may be the case with other pain-relief substances, drugs and medications. Many are looking for Opioid-alternatives in this day and age with all the heart-breaking addiction happening as a result of taking pain-reliving opioid drugs over time.

It is easy to travel with and use CBD when needed.

It is more affordable than many alternatives, such as issues around medications and costs of surgeries.

  • Medication alternative
  • Surgery alternative
  • Non-addicting
  • Affordable
  • Easy to Use

Why Try CBD at Aleesha D Acupuncture?

The brand at Aleesha D Acupuncture uses Charlotte’s Web™hemp extract, the Gold standard.

CBD products carried are practitioner-grade

CBD Cream carried here has the most powerful formulation of 11% camphor, 16% menthol for fast pain relief (instant to minutes)

Then the CBD kicks in after the camphor and menthol take effect (about 15 minutes)

–This is why CBD products have menthol and camphor added.

CBD Oil & Uses:
CBD Oil is commonly used to reduce severe, chronic pain and inflammation, anxiety and insomnia.

  • PAIN
  • ANXIETY
  • ARTHRITIS
  • HEADACHES
  • INSOMNIA
  • INFLAMMATION
  • BACK PAIN/ NECK PAIN/ BONE-ON-BONE KNEE PAIN

CBD Oil & How to Take:

CBD Oil is taken orally and sublingual (under tongue). Typically the inflammation-reducing oil is held under the tongue for 30-seconds and then swallowed. Some take it in the morning, bedtime or both.

CBD Oil & When to Take:

When to take CBD depends on symptoms and the individual. If taking for Insomnia or Sleep issues, it probably makes most sense to take CBD at night. If taking for Chronic pain and the pain disturbs sleep, taking CBD at night is a good place to start. If pain is worse at the beginning of the day, as is normal for Rheumatoid Arthritis patients, try taking CBD in the morning to get the joints going for the day.

CBD is sought after because it can be an alternative to addictive substances, both legal and illegal and has surprisingly effective pain-relief results! This is why it flies off of the shelves here at Aleesha D Acupuncture.

How Acupuncture Balances the Body

Acupuncture is good at relieving many unwanted signs and symptoms of the hormonal ups and down women experience during Menopause and Perimenopause.

For years women have suffered without relief. There is no reason to continue suffering!

Acupuncture is a great natural medical treatment for helping your body to balance itself through these hormonal transitions.

Acupuncture can help your body feel less radical ups and downs with the fluctuating hormone levels. T

his is because acupuncture can help your body to balance itself, hormonally.

Acupuncture signals the body to release pain and stress-relieving hormones, including neurotransmitters (feel-good hormones). This explains why acupuncture is so commonly used by those with Anxiety and Mild to Moderate Depression.

Read more on the specific hormones and chemicals affected by acupuncture for hot flashes here.

Read How Acupuncture Helps Depression Here

Fluctuations are natural during changes in hormone levels in our lives; during puberty, pregnancy, nursing (breast-feeding), peri-menopause, menopause and even post-menopause. Often times stress worsens these hormonal changes, making the transition more difficult and stressful than it needs to be. Thyroid Disease or thyroid imbalance can worsen during sudden hormonal changes within the body. Acupuncture can help the body balance itself during this time, making for a more harmonious transition.
