Foods with Vitamin D…

Vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin because absorption in the body improves with exposure to the sun.

Most of us who live up north (and more and more in the south now, too) are deficient in vitamin D.

Best Vitamin D food Sources:

  • Egg yolks
  • Fatty fish
  • Liver
  • Grass-fed butter
  • Grass-fed cheese

Fatty fishes like codfish, mackerel, halibut and wild caught Alaskan or sockeye salmon are high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D.

Liver is highly regarded in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diets for nourishing the vision. Beef or chicken livers can be fried up with onions and garlic and eaten monthly or more often for those who fall into the Qi and Blood deficiency patterns. Check with your doctor or dietitian first if you have diet restrictions.

Do you think you are deficient in vitamin D?

Are you tired?  Depressed?…

Is Your Depression Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Acupuncture is helpful to those with CFS.

Chronic Fatigue includes long-term extreme tiredness which does not respond appropriately to rest.

Does the following sound like you? …

  • Lower Immunity (prone to infection and illness)
  • Easily stressed (adrenal issues)
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Multiple body systems affected

Acupuncture Helps Chronic Fatigue.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a complex illness. It affects many systems in the body. It is called a “Syndrome” because we are not yet smart enough to understand all the signs and symptoms enough to call it a “disease.” This can be very frustrating to the individual. Doctors and other practitioners are getting better at recognizing CFS and other syndromes that affect the energy.

Acupuncture is good at improving energy and syndromes such as CFS fit within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) patterns so your acupuncturist can treat you under this pattern to help you to start feeling better.

Why Does Vitamin D Deficiency Seem to be the New Norm?

  • Change in Diet
  • Change in Chemicals sprayed on our Food
  • Diet & Chemical Effect on our Gut (Vitamin D Deficiency)

Why was vitamin d deficiency not a problem in Grandma’s day?…

People used to get their vitamin d from foods such as lard, fish and whole milk with natural vitamin d already in the foods. Lard with vitamin d is more difficult to find. Less people drink full fat milk with vitamin d, and even less eat fish, especially cod liver. There is not enough natural occurring vitamin d in cod liver oil supplements for most people who are deficient in lab results. So if low in d, you probably still need to supplement as well and need to check with your doctor on this before doing so anyway.

I remember my dad used to make me eat a cod fish oil capsule every week. When I asked him “Why?” he just said, “‘Cuz it’s good for you.” I don’t think he really knew why. He took it because his grandma told him to. Being Swedish, she probably knew it was necessary to eat oil from the the liver of cod. Swedes are low in vitamin d, too unless they supplement with food or supplements due to also being far from the equator. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, your body makes vitamin d, BUT…

that only applies if you are close enough to the equator. For those of us who live in the northern latitude of the world (like Minnesota) exposure of arms and legs for 15-20 minutes per day should suffice during the summer; during the fall and winter months you will most likely have to take a vitamin d supplement if your labs reveal deficiency. This is because you could lay out naked all day in the sun during the winter without it affecting your vitamin d synthesis. We are just not at the correct angle in relation to the sun here at that time. That is why some call vitamin d the “Sunshine vitamin.”  Check with your doctor to be sure vitamin d supplementation is right for you before doing so.

There is also the thing about The Pesticides used here in the U.S.A. since the 1970’s.

This insecticide (outlawed in much of Europe) blocks vitamin D absorption in the gut. Yikes!

Summary of Vitamin D Deficiency

  • Heart Health
  • Bone Health
  • Worldwide Problem
  • Energy and/or Mood
  • Checked with Blood Test

So, look out for Low Mood and Low Energy-it Could be Low Vitamin D. Ask your doctor to order a blood test to screen for vitamin d deficiency. If it is not low, then you have ruled out one possible cause to your low energy and mood. Note: many doctors in private practice (like my primary care doc) actually like to see vitamin d level higher than what conventional family medicine doctors deem as “healthy range” levels of vitamin d. Why? This is because vitamin d level can be high enough to keep you alive, though may not be “optimal” for your health as an individual.

If you take blood thinners like Coumadin® avoid taking the liquid vitamin d with k2 vitamin as vitamin k can interfere with the effects of this drug. Otherwise vitamin k is added because it can help with vitamin d absorption. Always check with your doctor first before adding anything to your supplements regimen.

Naturopathic doctors look at this way as well. Like acupuncturists, we look at medicine from a prevention perspective. It is a different medical paradigm than the Western one which is focused on treating a disease. Both types of medicine are needed and each has its time and place, for sure.

Who is Prone to Vitamin D Deficiency?

  • Age
  • Obese
  • Women
  • Medications
  • Northern climates

Are you in a population that is prone to having a vitamin d deficiency?

  • Osteoporosis
  • Kidney/ Liver Disease
  • Darker skin pigmentation
  • Gastrointestinal Surgeries (i.e., gastro bypass)

Risk factors of vitamin D Deficiency-Explained:

As we age, we tend toward malabsorption of vitamins and minerals so naturally there is less vitamin d absorption.

Some prescribed drugs can affect vitamin d metabolism, such as HIV/ Aids medications, anti-seizure drugs, anti-fungal drugs, etc.

Obese populations are more prone to vitamin d deficiency as the fat cells hold onto it (it is a fat soluble vitamin). So, vitamin d is often not used as ideally as it should in the overweight body.

Read Is Vitamin D Deficiency is New Thing?

Those who have darker skin are more prone to being deficient in vitamin d because it is not as easy to absorb the sun’s rays and convert vitamin d as with lighter skin. Melanin acts as a built-in sunscreen in dark skin, preventing sunshine from converting to d.

Stomach bypass surgeries cause many malabsorption issues, including vitamin d malabsorption, often resulting in vitamin d deficiency. This is why patients who undergo these surgeries are on vitamin and mineral supplements for life.

Women have a higher percentage of body fat so more d is stored and not used (fat soluble vitamin). Therefore, less is converted to use in the body.

Signs/ Symptoms You May be Low in Vitamin D

I take liquid vitamin d because liquid is good for absorption. It has added k2 vitamin for even better absorption of the vitamin d3. However, if you take blood thinners like Coumadin® avoid taking the liquid vitamin d with k2 vitamin as vitamin k can interfere with the effects of this drug. Otherwise vitamin k is added because it can help with vitamin d absorption. Always check with your doctor first before adding anything to your supplements regimen.

How to Diagnose Deficient Vitamin D

The only way to truly find out what your vitamin d level is in your body is to have a lab test done. Blood is drawn and vitamin d level is checked to see if it is in normal, healthy range.

Keep in mind that a Naturopathic doctor or functional medicine doctor may want to see your vitamin d in a higher “optimal” level than what a conventional family doctor may be comfortable with. Many insurances cover this lab test.

Fluctuations are natural during changes in hormone levels in our lives; during puberty, pregnancy, nursing (breast-feeding), peri-menopause, menopause and even post-menopause. Why You Should Supplement with Magnesium:

7 Signs/ Symptoms of Magnesium Deficiency:

  • Anxiety
  • Low Energy
  • Constipation
  • Muscle Cramps
  • Imbalanced Mood
  • Headaches/ Migraines
  • Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

Aleesha D Acupuncture Treats Restless Legs Syndrome.

Patient Testimonial on RLS Here

Which Type of Magnesium Should I Take?

The type of magnesium depends on digestive symptoms…

Take Magnesium Citrate to help with Mood, Energy and Constipation. Magnesium Citrate is the magnesium type that is actually prescribed at the hospital to help get things moving again after surgery and the medications given that both can cause constipation. If taking for constipation, back off the dosage if diarrhea results. Too much Magnesium (just like too much vitamin C) can cause diarrhea. It can be a good way to measure the threshold of how much Magnesium (Citrate) to take.

Take Magnesium Glycinate to help with Mood and Energy if you already have regular, daily bowel movements. Taking the Citrate form when you are already having regular, daily bowel movements will probably result in loose stool and possibly diarrhea.

Why Can’t I Just Eat Magnesium-Rich Foods Instead?

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to get enough Magnesium in our foods now days. This is because the soil which the normally Magnesium-rich foods grow in are deficient of Magnesium due to conventional fertilizers, over-tilling the soil, and not rotating crops appropriately. The roots of plants cannot pull up out of the ground what is just not there. So, the food is devoid of Magnesium.

Wouldn’t Low Magnesium Show in my Labs?

Less than 1% of Magnesium is found in the blood, so this is not the best way to test if you are getting enough Magnesium.

Yes, Acupuncture is an effective medical treatment for the relief of anxiety.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture has been a natural alternative to anxiety medication for many of my patients over the years, even the most skeptical.

Of course, anyone thinking of stopping any prescribed medication should always consult with their doctor first, and should only begin tapering any prescription medication under careful doctor supervision.
