Yes! Acupuncture Stops Tension Headaches!

What is a Tension Headache?

Tension headaches are the most common of all headache types, usually felt as a constant, dull pain across the forehead or frontal/ forehead area. Tension headaches are not severe or worrisome, though they are annoying.

Causes/ Triggers of Tension Headaches:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Jaw Clenching
  • Poor ergonomics
  • Overworking/ Infrequent meals (typical “Type-A”  American)

Think This May Be Another Type of Headache?..

Is This the WORST Headache of Your Life? … Find Out if You Have Cluster Headaches Here!

Why Do I Keep Getting Tension Headaches?

The reason tension headaches are so rampant in the modern world is due to the “rat race” of trying to get it all done. We are all guilty of it at some point in our lives. Clenching the jaw while under deadlines or stressful situations is common with tension headache sufferers. Another reason could be the incorrect work ergonomics at your desk. Acupuncture is great for all types of headaches, including TMJ headaches and for relieving stress and issues which are stress-induced.

What You Can Do:

  • Get to a Licensed Acupuncturist for headaches!
  • Start a daily Mindfulness Meditation Practice
  • Re-evaluate Desk Ergonomics
  • Continue Self Care

Mindfulness meditation is a daily practice to help coax us out of staying constantly in this stressful “striving” mindset. If we stay in this “fight or flight” reactionary place too long, we burn the candle at both ends and become exhausted and suffer disease and dis-ease. This meditation type is aimed at helping to relieve suffering and dis-ease and is used successfully with many struggling with chronic pain and stress to get to a place of feeling more at ease, more often. Find further resources here.

Acupuncture is helpful for relieving headache pain and stress. Many patients come in monthly or seasonally after their main complaints resolve for a “tune-up” appointment to help keep their body in balance.

Self Care like regular meals, hydration and stretching at your desk can serve as muscle tension headache prevention.

If you are like me and can hyper-focus on what you are passionate about for hours without eating or drinking water, you may need to set an alarm in your phone until you get used to taking better care of yourself. Having a container for water handy may be serve as the visual cue to remind you while you work that you are not an android and must hydrate! If you do not, you will quickly remember just how human you are! Dehydration can lead to headaches and that sense of anxiousness, agitated mood or irritability-our body’s way of telling us to take a mini-break, sip and do a Yoga Pose or Two!

Acupuncture for Car Accident Injury and Pain (Pain and Women’s Health in Anoka, MN)

Acupuncture for Back Pain, Neck Pain and Headaches after Auto Injury

Acupuncture can help relieve back pain, neck pain and headaches due to auto accident injury. Low back pain, neck tension and recurring headaches or migraine are common after car accidents and many people see great results with acupuncture.

Why Get Acupuncture for Neck Pain?

Acupuncture helps with sore neck due to whiplash (subluxation) after auto accident. After a car accident imaging such as fMRI often shows nothing is wrong, though a patient is still suffering from aches and pains. This is because muscles and ligaments may be strained in the neck, causing pain. Acupuncture helps lower inflammation and trigger point acupuncture helps release tight muscles to relieve pain. Acupuncture can also relieve chronic neck pain by breaking up scar tissue within the muscle fascia, left over from old auto accident injuries. This helps relieve muscle spasm pain and stiffness in the neck and shoulders.

Acupuncture for Migraine Headaches

Migraine Headache Testimonial

Acupuncture helps relieve headaches and migraines after auto accident, whether the headache pain is located at the base of the neck, the forehead, temples, top of the head, jaw/ facial pain or pain all over the entire head. Acupuncture helps all types of headaches, whatever the root cause.

  • Stress-related headaches
  • TMJ (temporal mandibular jaw syndrome) headaches
  • Trigeminal neuralgia headaches

Acupuncture for Back Pain

Back Pain Patient Testimonial

Acupuncture is well known for improving acute back pain, whether due to muscle strain or herniated disc, also known as a “slipped” disc or spondylolisthesis (where a disc slips over the vertebra beneath it). Acupuncture is also good for congenital (since birth) back pain, such as pain of spina bifida. Acupuncture is good for chronic back pain due to many reasons, including arthritis pain and degenerative disc disease.

  • Acute (recent) back pain
  • Chronic (long-term) back pain
  • Congenital (since birth) back pain

What is the Science behind How Acupuncture Decreases Pain?

Acupuncture decreases pain by inciting the body to release specific endorphins which relieve pain, acupuncture increases Qi and blood (circulation) to the affected area and decreases inflammation in the body (inflammation causes pain and chronic inflammation causes disease).

  • Acupuncture releases Pain-relieving endorphins (hormones)
  • Acupuncture increases circulation
  • Acupuncture lowers inflammation

Why try Acupuncture For Pain?

Acupuncture works for pain relief (well-researched for pain relief) and is a medical treatment alternative to medications which may be habit-forming (addictive) and may lead to further issues. Some patients find they are able to avoid back surgery for pain after acupuncture treatments.

Licensed acupuncturists look for the root cause of the pain instead of merely treating and covering up the symptoms, in order to not only stop the pain, but also keep the pain from returning (prevention).

For instance, three people may present with headaches and instead of giving each individual the same pill or using the same set of prescribed acupuncture points, they are each asked detailed questions in order to find out the root cause, i.e., genetics, hormonal, allergies, stress, physical trauma due to injury, etc.

  • Research proves acupuncture is effective for treating pain
  • Acupuncture treats the root cause, not just the symptoms
  • Acupuncture treats the individual (treatments are specific to each individual)
  • Acupuncture is an effective alternative to pain killers and sometimes to recommended surgery

How Many Acupuncture Treatments?

Acupuncture should relieve pain within about three treatments and significant pain relief should happen after about six treatments, in general. However, individuals react differently to acupuncture and many factors need to be considered such as, how long the issue has been around (chronic versus acute pain), compliance or how well patient follows practitioner recommendations, such as frequency of treatments and at-home-care, other factors like age, overall health of the individual and how quickly one’s body responds to acupuncture.

What is Cupping (in Anoka, MN)?

What is Cupping?

Like acupuncture, cupping is a centuries-old therapy used under Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment in Anoka and works well for treating muscle pain tension and many other issues.

How is Cupping Done?

Cupping therapy should be a painless procedure and can involve plastic cups with a hand pump being used to achieve suction or glass cups using fire to achieve suction with the skin. Don’t worry- the fire never comes in contact with the skin and the glass does not become hot enough to burn the skin!

Be sure to have someone do cupping who is specially trained,

such as a licensed acupuncturist!

Cupping with glass cups:

  • An alcohol-soaked cotton ball is lit on fire
  • This creates a vacuum inside glass cups
  • Cups are then quickly placed on the skin

(Fire is removed before cups contact skin)

  • Cups stay suctioned to skin due to negative pressure
  • Cups are usually left on for around 10-15 minutes

Cupping with plastic cups: Plastic cups are secured using hand-pump.

Why choose cupping for pain relief?

  • Cupping has no side effects (besides temporary discoloration to treated area) and is a non-habit forming treatment, un-like some medications.
  • Cupping is a useful treatment for muscular pain like back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain.
  • Cupping relieves muscle tension pain caused by stagnation in the tissues

Remember seeing red circles on the back of Olympic Gold Medalist swimmer Michael Phelps? He used cupping in between Olympic races in order to improve circulation in the muscles!

How does it work?

  • Cupping therapy works by releasing stagnation and pain from the meridians or channels (energy pathways) of the body to relieve pain.
  • Cupping drains toxins and pathogens to promote circulation.
  • Cupping moves lymph to detoxify the blood to strengthen the immune system.

What does Cupping treat?

Cupping treats muscular pain and muscle spasms, relieve pain, back pain, muscle tightness, joint pain, musculoskeletal pain from stress and old injuries such as auto accident, cough, allergies, asthma, wheezing and sinus issues due to allergies, asthma and bronchitis.

  • Poor breathing, wheezing and cough with asthma or bronchitis
  • Blood circulation of the muscles in the back, neck and shoulders
  • Promotes circulation of the lymph
  • muscle pain due to old injuries
  • Muscle tension
  • Stress

Cupping helps with muscle and lymph circulation, and is helpful for the prevention of cold and flu by draining toxins and pathogens, which promotes circulation of the lymphatic system, cleaning the blood and lymph, and thereby strengthening the immune system.

Cupping is used for muscle tension and pain, most commonly for tight shoulders and back pain. Many patients find cupping as an add-on treatment to acupuncture helps loosen tight muscles for longer-lasting relief when muscle spasms or knots in the muscles are present.

Cupping can help relieve muscle tension headaches when added to acupuncture treatment.

Do you ever wonder when you should be worried about your headache pain? Headaches are a common main complaint for patients and acupuncture is an effective treatment for headaches and migraines in Anoka. However, some headaches should never be ignored…When should you seek medical attention for a headache or migraine?

  1. Severe or Sudden Headache!
  • Headaches with severe pain
  • and sudden onset
  • with other Neurological signs

Any headache which starts suddenly with severe pain intensity or with other neurological signs, such as dizziness, vomiting, or unconsciousness can be a sign of bleeding of the brain or another medical emergency and should be taken serious. Often times people will describe this type of headache as a “thunderclap” headache due to the quick, intense pain or as “the worst pain I have ever felt.” Complete medical work-up may be necessary. Aleesha D Acupuncture in Anoka successfully treats headaches and migraines.

Any headache with severe, sudden onset warrants immediate medical care.

2. Severe Headache with Stiff Neck!

  • Headaches with severe pain
  • and Stiff Neck
  • and flu-like signs/symptoms

A headache with sudden, severe pain, stiff neck and flu-like symptoms such as fever could be a serious infection called Meningitis and warrants immediate medical attention to avoid permanent brain damage or even death. Headache due to Meningitis may include the following signs or symptoms; confusion, double vision, fever, light sensitivity, nausea and or vomit.

It is critical to seek immediate medical care with Meningitis-like headache in order to avoid permanent brain damage, blindness, deafness, and even death.

3. Sudden, Severe Headache with Dizziness!

  • Headaches with sudden, severe pain
  • and Dizziness
  • possible nausea/ vomiting
  • possible one-sided body impairment
  • Difficulty walking and/or talking

Sudden, severe headache with dizziness and nausea/ vomiting could be due to Meniere’s Disease.  Severe headache may be due to Stroke, especially with confusion, impaired speech or movement (especially one side of the body) or one side of the face appears to be drooping.

It is critical to seek immediate medical care with Stroke-like headache to avoid permanent speech impairment, permanent motor (movement) and/or sensory (feeling) impairment and possible death.

4. Sudden Headache following Head Trauma!

  • Headaches following trauma
  • which worsen
  • with confusion
  • with drowsiness
  • with cognitive impairment
  • with changes in eye(s) or vision
  • with unconsciousness

Headache after head trauma, especially worsening headache could be due to concussion or Traumatic Brain Injury (T.B.I.).

It is critical to seek medical attention which may include brain imaging for worsening headache after any head trauma to rule out concussion, TBI or determine which degree of TBI; it is possible some degree of long-term damage may be avoided with proper medical care.

5. Headache following Two Consecutive (Immediate) Head Traumas!

Consecutive head traumas occurring back-to-back, one following the other is common in contact sports such as hockey, football and boxing and it is critical to seek immediate medical attention to hopefully avoid long-term damage from a double concussion.

It is critical to seek immediate medical attention for Headache after two consecutive blows to the head as a double concussion can occur (even with minor concussion) called Second Impact Syndrome (SIS) whereby the brain swells without time for inflammation to go down in between concussions–This can result in a catastrophic outcome!

Look for a licensed acupuncturist in your area to see if acupuncture can help with your headaches or migraines.

Aleesha D Acupuncture treats headaches and migraines due to many different causes, including Migraine headaches, Cluster headaches, Trigeminal Neuralgia headaches, Hormonal headaches, Headaches due to injury, Stress-induced headaches, Muscle tension headaches, etc. Aleesha has treated patients with long-term issues after multiple concussions and those dealing with the effects of T.B.I.

Why Do Concussion/ TBI Patients Seek Acupuncture?

Acupuncture cannot undue the long-term brain damage with T.B.I., whether auto accident or sports injury was involved in the head injury. However…

Acupuncture can help manage some of the symptoms which lowers the quality of life (Q.O.L.) in many patients with lingering issues from concussion or TBI.

Acupuncture often helps patients who have had concussion(s) or minor degree of TBI with symptoms such as:

  • Mood

  • Energy

  • Appetite

  • “Brain fog”

  • Low libido

  • Sleep issues
